SCB Steelers Quick Hitters: The “Making Auditions” Edition

by Steeldad

Good Wednesday to you Steelers fans.

Mike Tomlin made it official yesterday. Chris Morgan has a two-game job interview. With Adrian Klemm already gone, Morgan has been elevated to the top OL Coach where he will now prove whether or not he’s up to the task. The former Colorado Buffalo has served as the top dog before. He was the Offensive Line Coach for the Atlanta Falcons from 2015-2020. During his time in Atlanta his units finished 18th, 5th, 13th, 27th, 30th and 27th in rushing yards. While there are some decent results, there are also some pretty dismal ones. The fact that Morgan has this many years under his belt as the head OL guy tells me this really isn’t a tryout. The Steelers already know if they want him to return or not if you ask me. His retention isn’t going to make many fans thrilled especially if there are more successful and more experienced guys available. Stranger things have happened but can we really expect this unit to change so drastically at this point in the season? It would be nice wouldn’t it?

From the Training Room

Pat Freiermuth said on Instagram that he’s back so we’ll go ahead and assume the team will officially announce he’s through protocol any time. Kevin Dotson has a shot to return this week as well from his ankle injury as well. Mike Tomlin said he expects all players save for those on the Covid list to have a shot to return this week.

Tweet of the Day…  I know exactly how you feel Dane.

Oh Canada

Tomlin was asked about Matt Canada’s play-calling yesterday and said he had no reservations with it but admitted there’s a learning curve from the college ranks to the pro level. Did any of us really think Tomlin was going to say anything other than something just like this? For all we know, he may think Canada’s play-calling is far worse than we do! What good what it do however to criticize Canada now? With two divisional games left? Believe me, all of this will be addressed but not until the season is complete.

Claypool

If I can criticize Chase Claypool then I can certainly give him some praise too. A week after a lousy home game performance that followed his embarrassing antics in Minnesota, Claypool made several really good catches against the Chiefs. They did not change the outcome and they are nothing to really celebrate but… Three of these catches were the “combat” type of grab you have to have him make week in and week out. If he’s going to be seen as a top receiver in this league those catches have to become routine.
