SCB Steelers Quick Hitters: The “Looking Good” Edition

by Steeldad

Good Wednesday to you Steelers fans.

Apologies for yesterday’s absence as the technology gremlins were in full force… Anyway, I can’t tell you how much I enjoyed seeing clips of the Pittsburgh Steelers at work yesterday. While professional football really is a 365-day a year entity now, a large portion of that is off the field. Therefore, any chance I get to see the player “on the field” is a great thing in my mind. When I say they were “looking good” I don’t mean that Ben Roethlisberger and others were in mid-season form. I simply mean that it’s good to see them out there. If you by chance are one of those who was already critiquing the throws of Big Ben, Mason Rudolph and Dwayne Haskins then you really need to find another hobby. Of all the action I saw, I don’t recall seeing one QB plant hard, drive the hips and zing a ball with 100% effort. That’s not what this week is about. This week is about getting on the field. Getting acclimated to new players and re-connecting with old ones. It’s where things start to get put into place in terms of terminology and so. For me, this is just something I enjoy seeing because it’s a step toward bigger and better things down the road.

Najee in the Books

The Steelers came to terms with first round draft pick Najee Harris yesterday. These things seem so matter of fact now-a-days because I can tell you there was a time when top round draft picks would hold out well into the summer and sometimes into Training Camp. The rookie wage scale has taken care of a lot of that and I’m grateful for it.

And Fry is Too!

Second round pick Pat Freiermuth, the tight end from Penn State, signed his contract late yesterday as well.

Tweet of the Day… I typically hate debates about players who are from different eras but this is very interesting. LT was something special but I admit Donald is too.

The Ben Bashing

Steelers’ Captain Cam Heyward has clearly had enough. He’s had enough of the hatred that comes Ben Roethlisberger’s way from fans and the media. One could simply say that Heyward is just being a good captain and good leader by sticking up for his quarterback. I would suggest it is in large part still reflective of fans (and some media) who have never forgiven Roethlisberger for the events of 2010. I can’t tell those people how to think or how to feel. I can ask them to do their research to educate themselves but most don’t. So when Seven plays poorly that is usually one of the things that gets brought up over and over. Big Ben doesn’t need any of us to tell him when he plays poorly or makes bad decisions. He knows better than any of us. The spotlight of this disdain towards him will be more glaring than ever now. There is a decent sized segment of fans who wanted him to retire and are less than thrilled that he’s back for another go. Heyward is in no mood to hear it.
