SCB Steelers Quick Hitters: The ‘Last Weekend of Football’ Edition

Good Friday to you Steelers fans.

This is always a weekend I dread. It’s the last weekend of meaningful football for the next six-plus months. Please don’t tell me about the USFL or XFL either. I’m going to spend more time watching the Combine than watching those games… Alas, part of me likes reaching the end of an NFL season because that means there’s a beginning. I enjoy the draft prep and the free agency period but I do miss the week to week grind that the NFL regular season offers. Despite our Steelers not playing in the Super Bowl I shall hope for a competitive game and for commercials that actually entertain me. Outside of that? I’ll do my best to enjoy the last weekend of football and I’m sure you will too.

Mock Time

I’ve published my first Steelers’ Mock Draft for 2023 and you can read that here. Understand that since free agency has yet to begin, the level of position need is more difficult to truly grasp right now but I did my due diligence and came up with an intriguing group of selections.

Tweet of the Day… He ain’t lyin’.

The Statement I Make Every Time This Time of Year (Numerous Times Actually)

Not surprisingly with free agency about a month away, fans and websites are already linking the Steelers with literally every single free agent set to hit the market. So here’s the truth. The Steelers have had a list of free agents for months. They have free agent target lists of guys they are interested in. You may be surprised to hear this but they aren’t actually interested in every one of them simply because you think the player “would be a good fit.” That’s not how it works and the sooner you accept this reality the better!

Najee

For whatever reason – perhaps because it’s the offseason for us – Steelers’ fans and other have been chiming in on whether Najee Harris is a ‘bust’ or not. I’ve always believed that term is subjective. QBs face standards that are different than other positions and so on… In that light, I have no idea how anyone can call Harris a “bust.” After a very good rookie year, he started slowly in 2022 and with good reason. He was dealing with a foot injury throughout the first half of the season. Once he was able to remove the plate from his shoe, his performance took off immediately. So through two seasons, he’s rushed for over 2,200 yards, caught passes for just under 700 yards and has recorded 20 touchdowns. He’s also started all 34 games he’s been active for too. Are there more ‘dynamic’ or ‘faster’ backs? Yes, there are but that doesn’t mean Harris is a bust. Not even close.
