SCB Steelers Quick Hitters: The “Known Unknown” Edition

Heyward of the Steelers. steelcityblitz.com

Good Friday to you Steelers fans.

One of the reasons I do Mock Drafts is to create conversation. I don’t intentionally make selections that are so far-fetched that readers have to comment but rather, I like to attack the areas of the team where ‘known unknowns’ exist. From there, speculation ensues. The biggest of these areas is the offensive line. We know the Steelers signed James Daniel and Mason Cole. If you assume both will start then it appears likely that Cole would play center and Daniels right guard. Kevin Dotson would play left guard next to Dan Moore and Chuks Okorafor would play right tackle. Those are the assumptions as of now but… Is this what the Steelers are planning? Did they sign Daniels to play guard or to move back to center where he played for two years at Iowa and then from time to time in Chicago? Was Mason Cole signed more to be a backup than a starter? And where does Kendrick Green fit? Mike Tomlin said earlier this week when asked about Green moving to guard that he was “open to it.”  So what I went ahead and did for my mock was assume Daniels would play center and that’s why I went with Boston College’s Zion Johnson in round one of my penultimate mock draft. Bottom line? We still don’t know how this offensive line will shake out.

The Podcast

We did episode 263 of the SCB Steelers Podcast presented by DEK Roofing Inc last evening. We discussed the wide receiver and running back positions in the draft and the current roster at those positions as well. It was a birthday edition as well so there was plenty of adult beveraging going on! Audio or video versions available.

Tweet of the Day… Cam having some fun on April Fools’ Day.

Time Running Out?

Right now the Steelers are pretty well set at every position but one. By “set,” I mean they have a capable starting option everywhere except strong safety. While Steelers Nation continues to clamor for Tyrann Mathieu, the realization is that he isn’t coming here any time soon. That doesn’t mean he won’t, but right now, he isn’t coming and Terrell Edmunds doesn’t appear to be in any hurry to re-sign with them either. Does this situation suddenly move that position way up on the Draft board? Kyle Hamilton of Notre Dame falling to the Steelers would be a dream-like scenario but he’s too damn good and if he gets out of the top 10 I’d be shocked. The position isn’t exactly a deep one in this draft so the Steelers approach here is going to be very curious.
