SCB Steelers Quick Hitters: The “Jack in the Box” Edition

Good Thursday to you Steelers fans.

You can say whatever you want regarding Kevin Colbert but he’s addressing the needs of this football team. Upgrade at QB? Done. Upgrade on the O-Line? Done. Help in the secondary? Done. Find a linebacker who can tackle and cover? Done. You might not like the players that Colbert has brought in but at the very least he’s attacking all of the spots that needed the most help and yesterday he hit a home run. Myles Jack coming to Pittsburgh gives the Steelers the ‘stud’ at ILB they’ve sorely needed. He becomes the ‘Jack in the Box’ we need and probably won’t be the only ILB brought in to be honest. I can easily see one being taken in the Draft. The jury is still very much out on Buddy Johnson who battled injuries most of his rookie season. Devin Bush is facing a huge challenge as he tries to bounce back from an awful season and Robert Spillane is what he is. Any injury to Jack puts this unit right back at square one so drafting a player to mold makes perfect sense. That time will come however. For the time being we can celebrate the fact that the Steelers and Kevin Colbert have been active players in free agency.

The Podcast

We have a ton to discuss on tonight’s SCB Steelers Podcast presented by DEK Roofing Inc. We will discuss ALL of the recent moves by the Steelers this week and we will enjoy some fine Irish beverages in celebration of St. Patrick’s Day!

Tweet of the Day… I guess this is newsworthy. I know Dane is having some fun with it.

Speaking of…

There’s no question that the signing of Trubisky means the QB job is his to lose. He has more experience and more success than Mason Rudolph has had. So what does this mean for Rudy? I have to believe he wants out of Pittsburgh badly. The team drafted him and had no QB Coach for him his rookie year. He was thrown into the fire way before he was ready. The team felt 39-year old Ben Roethlisberger was a better option than he was and now, they’ve signed someone else who is clearly the odds on favorite for the gig. We can argue all day as to whether he was given a “fair” shot or not but that isn’t the point here. He’s a perpetual second string QB who believes he’s better than that. I’m guessing teams will call especially if their own QB situations are awful.

JuJu

It’s always fascinating to me to see the number of people who hate JuJu Smith-Schuster. Their dislike of him because of his social media usage trumps their like of him as a player. I’ve never really understood this. I said many times that JuJu’s ‘logo stomping’ was childish and unprofessional. But I’ve also said there isn’t a tougher and harder working receiver on our team. Currently, he finds himself in the same spot he did last year at this time. The market for wide receivers isn’t where he hoped it would be (unless you’re Christian Kirk) and as each day goes by the possibility of him returning increases. At this time I believe he will play elsewhere but I won’t be upset at all should he return.
