SCB Steelers Quick Hitters: The “Gravy Train” Edition

Good Tuesday to you Steelers fans.

I can’t tell you how many times in the last 36 hours I’ve heard or read one derogatory remark after another about our Pittsburgh Steelers being in the playoffs. “The Steelers are terrible! Big Ben moves like a tree!! The Chiefs are going to destroy you guys!!!” All of those things may be true. But you know what? There isn’t one fan, player or coach who cares about any of that. Getting into the playoffs is the goal for every team when the season begins and how you achieve that goal doesn’t matter. For all any of us know, the Steelers may go back to Kansas City and get beat worse than they did several weeks ago but it’s the opportunity that matters. Currently, NFL odds has us in this situation… But it’s the chance to be on a national stage where anything can happen, yes, even an upset of the vaunted Chiefs. This team, with all of its problems, making the playoffs is a monstrous achievement and regardless of the outcome Sunday it’s all gravy. No one expects a win. No one expects a close game. In other words, the Steelers have them right where they want them.

Tomlin Tuesday

The most important thing in Mike Tomlin’s presser today will be the update on Najee Harris’ elbow. Despite him coming back to play in the second half, it’s doubtful that his elbow is going to be 100%. Hopefully we hear good news on that and everything else.

Tweet of the Day… If you didn’t know, many Steelers’ fans have been donating to charities that Raiders’ kicker Daniel Carlson is associated with. He of course kicked the Steelers into the postseason late Sunday night.

Great New Stuff From FOCO

Over the years I’ve had the pleasure of working closely with the team at FOCO. Today I’m excited to help them introduce some great new Steelers items from them. First up is the T.J. Watt Gamebreaker Bobblehead. This celebrates him tying Michael Strahan for the season sack record. The other one here combines the NFL and Nickleodeon.steelcityblitz.com

First Look at Beating the Chiefs

For those old enough to remember Super Bowl XXV, this was the game that pitted the high-flying Bills against the blue collar and hard-nosed Giants. Bill Parcells’ gameplan was simple. Possess the ball so they can’t. While it took a missed field goal to achieve the goal, Parcells’ gameplan was perfect. The time of possession in that game favored his G-Men by the count of 40:33 to 19:27. I mention this because this really is the page Mike Tomlin needs to tear out. It will require his O-Line to go beyond themselves and it will demand that receivers don’t drop passes and it will demand that Ben Roethlisberger is accurate.  Far-fetched? To the extent the Giants did it to the Bills it is but it’s a goal worth shooting for. The less time Patrick Mahomes has the ball the less he can do with it. That’s where I’d start this week.
