SCB Steelers Quick Hitters: The “Getting Closer” Edition

by Steeldad

Good Tuesday to you Steelers fans.

Each passing day draws us closer to the Pittsburgh Steelers getting back onto the football field. This rite of passage is an important milestone each you for those of who have grown tired of ESPN and NFLN creating top 10 lists of everything from best quarterback to which long snapper spins it the best. Because of the Steelers’ participation in the Hall of Fame Game they will be reporting as early as the 21st. Fans will get their first chance to see the Black and Gold in person on July 28th. As we all know, Training Camp is once again in Pittsburgh and not in Latrobe. That doesn’t mean you shouldn’t go experience it.

Speaking of Top 10…

You’ve probably seen that ESPN Top 10 quarterbacks list… Not surprisingly Ben Roethlisberger isn’t on it. I’m OK with this for a couple of reasons. First, the narrative in the press is that his fall off at the end of last year will continue. Second, younger QBs have finally emerged as capable, winning players and that’s normal. It has to happen eventually. Lastly, I’m good with it because I continue to like us flying under the radar and that includes Big Ben. I guarantee you that while he doesn’t pay a lot of attention to the media he definitely knows a lot of people have moved on from him. That has to be motivating.

Tweet of the Day… Mel is one of my longest friends in social media. Tweets like this one are just one reason why. Bring back the block numerals!!

Let’s Talk Minkah

One Steeler who wasn’t ignored in these “Top 10” lists was safety Minkah Fitzpatrick who typically the top thought of safety around the NFL. Since arriving in 2019 in that early season trade with Miami, Fitzpatrick has been the secondary leader the Steelers have lacked since Troy Polamalu left. I know a lot of Miami Dolphins’ fans who ask “where was this guy when he was here?” That’s something I don’t know if anyone can answer. Some players just need a certain environment and a certain style of coaching. Frankly I don’t care what went on in South Florida and I don’t believe Kevin Colbert cares either. They did their homework, made the trade and it has been great ever since. No need to think anything more than that. And don’t forget how young he is too. Could be in Black and Gold a long time!
