SCB Steelers Quick Hitters: The ‘Filling the Void’ Edition

Heyward of the Steelers. steelcityblitz.com

Good Wednesday to you Steelers fans. This past Sunday was rough wasn’t it? It was the first time since late July that we didn’t have NFL football and please don’t tell me the XFL filled the void. Was it interesting? Sure it was! There are some very intriguing aspects of how the game is conducted that are worth exploring for the NFL. A better way to get through the off-season is by clicking this link. If you’re like us, you’ve already jumped into Draft coverage with both feet and you’re also looking at free agency as well. Personally? I like the fact that there’s a void of games in the calendar of the National Football League. It makes the return of the game that much more special in the late summer and early fall. In the meantime, go for a walk and let the stress of the Steelers slip away. Yeah, right?

The Podcast

With me heading out of town we’ll record the SCB Steelers Podcast presented by DEK Roofing Inc tonight. Fair warning! We are in the midst of an ice storm so I’m hoping our power holds out. Anyway, plenty of great Steelers’ talk awaits!!

Tweet of the Day… I had this hat. Waiting for it to arrive was hell!

The Strategy

Clearly, we don’t know how Omar Khan, Andy Weidl and Mike Tomlin are approaching free agency and the Draft. We have a very good idea based on the current roster but until free agency starts in mid-March we are all in the dark a bit. The Draft strategy will then come into focus. What I am most curious about is the approach to three spots; Offensive Line, Defensive Line and Cornerback. With the improvement and consistency of the O-Line as 2022 wore on I think that probably becomes the least important but not by much. The Steelers are dreadfully thin on the D-Line and at corner so I’m not going to be surprised at all of the first two selections target those areas. What will be most curious to me is if they are sitting there are 17 and one of those top OL and CB are still there? What’s the play? I would LOVE a trade down for a few more picks but I have to think the Steelers would go OL here. Their history of drafting CBs in the first round has not been very good in recent history. That said, they have to rebuild that area so I could hardly blame them. The one position no one really discusses in the first round is defensive line and I tend to think it would be a huge ‘get’ if those top OL and CBs are already gone.

Making It Official

Steelers’ Captain and all-pro defensive lineman Cam Heyward officially stated on his podcast this week that he is in fact “not retiring.” I don’t think any of us were really concerned about this but Heyward is going to be 34 this season. While his play this past season was quite good, we all know Father Time eventually wins out. With Heyward clearly honing his media skills in the last year or two, it wouldn’t shock me if he did decide to move on to his life’s work, but I’m also glad he hasn’t made that choice yet.
