SCB Steelers Quick Hitters: The “Early Look” Edition

by Steeldad

Good Tuesday to you Steelers’ fans.

I’m not what you’d call a “big gambler” but I enjoy dabbling in this art every once in awhile, especially as it pertains to sports. With this in mind I decided to take an early look at some one of the Steelers’ 2020 win totals. Even with Ben Roethlisberger missing 90% of the season, the Steelers went 8-8 last year and nearly met their 9.0 win total. With Big Ben back and the defense looking as solid as last year, Pittsburgh’s win total for 2020 is sitting at 9.5. Getting to 10 wins will be tough, though, as the Steelers play the sixth-hardest schedule in the NFL this season (based on the projected wins of all opponents).  Keep in mind of course that teams change and there are always a few teams that don’t live up to the hype and those that come out of nowhere.

Coach Widenhofer

As we move further and further away from the 1970’s, we also lose many of the greats that helped build the Steelers’ dynasty. We lost George Perles not long ago and now we are learning of the passing of Woody Widenhofer. He coached the linebackers and then was the defensive coordinator for the Steelers’ fourth Super Bowl win giving him a fourth ring. Best wishes to his family.

Tweet of the Day… Wow do I feel this tweet.

Mariota Huh?

“We should sign Marcus Mariota!” Oh really?? Yes, this was a cry from many Steelers’ fans leading into free agency yet again people often forget the really important part here; money! Did you see his contract details with Las Vegas (I admit I wrote Oakland first)? The deal is for two years, $17.5 million and $7.5 guaranteed but the incentives are huge. If he becomes the starter he could earn up to $37.5 million. Essentially, the Steelers would have been paying a backup QB $8ish million per season. There is no way they can afford that, sorry.

Oh and that Jameis Thing

Bob Labriola of Steelers.com would be the first to tell you that he isn’t always 100% correct but he seems pretty confident and thorough about why Jameis Winston will not be coming to Pittsburgh. You can find out right here from today’s ‘Asked and Answered.’

The Podcast

After finally getting our schedules linked, Ben, Ian and I will record episode 168 of the Steel City Blitz Steelers Podcast tonight. Comp picks, free agency recap and a whole lot more on the agenda.

Have a great day Steeler Nation!
