SCB Steelers Quick Hitters: The “Draft Hole” Edition

by Steeldad

Good Thursday to you Steelers fans.

If it always seems that the Pittsburgh Steelers are never in the “right position” to draft the “right guys” then this year must have you really steamed. The team’s first two picks are at 24 and 55 so stop me if you’ve heard this before… “24 is too early for (insert player here) but he won’t be around at 55.” It seems to me that I’ve heard this comment one thousand times or more and the truth is that there is some validity to it. Running backs like Travis Etienne or Najee Harris might be seen as “reaches” at 24 but there’s no way in the world either are there at 55. The same can be said for a guy like Penn State’s Pat Freiermuth. The big tight end is not seen as a first round talent but the chances he’s there at 55 are slim and none. Then you look at centers. Creed Humphrey of Oklahoma had a terrific Pro Day and likely moved himself up in the second. Landon Dickerson, who has questions about his overall health, could slide to 55 but do the Steelers like him anyway? What’s perhaps even worse about this ‘Draft Hole’ is that some really good players have been found there. Take running backs for instance which this team sorely needs. Dalvin Cook, Miles Sanders, Derrick Henry and Joe Mixon are just recent examples. All of this becomes a moot point if the Steelers trade up or trade down (which they rarely do) and either way they are going to get good players but it’s hard to ignore that hole that exists there.

What’s Up With JuJu?

So you thought JuJu Smith-Schuster would be long gone and playing for someone else by now right? Well, so did we. What has happened is that the wide receiver market has gone from an already slow pace to almost a standstill.Likely what is going on is this. JuJu and his agent are probably looking for something which they feel they deserve but teams aren’t willing to go there when they see what comparable players are getting. Some teams look at JuJu as a guy who has to have a big-time receiver across from him to really produce and there’s some evidence to prove that’s correct. JuJu has 12 100-yard receiving games and ten of those occurred with Antonio Brown on the roster. Keep an eye on Kenny Golladay. He’s already received a one-year offer from the Bengals and is visiting the Giants today. I believe once his issue is settled then JuJu will fall in line. Is Pittsburgh back in play for his services? Maybe but I still see him going elsewhere.
