TGIF Steelers’ Fans!

Well, it’s now official. Randy Fichtner is the Steelers’ new Offensive Coordinator but he will also retain his title as Quarterbacks Coach as well. My gut feeling here is that the Steelers will have someone else helping with quarterbacks and that someone else could be Danny Rooney. He was a QB at Dartmouth and spent time as a coaching intern this past season. As for Fichtner, he’s the guy I’ve wanted all along. He spent five years as a wide receivers’ coach before becoming the QB coach. No one knew Ben Roethlisberger as well as he did when Todd Haley was hired and that holds even more true today. Fichtner has much to clean up but I’m confident he will.

I think Lawrence Timmons returning to the Steelers is a possibility only because they are desperate for help at inside linebacker. Ryan Shazier should not be in the discussion until his overall health improves. Sean Spence was clearly not the answer nor was Tyler Matakevich or L.J. Fort. Essentially the only stable linebacker right now is Vince Williams. Timmons would likely return on a vet minimum, one year deal.

I’m still not buying there won’t be defensive staff changes.

Tweet of the Day… In case you didn’t know what Coach Fichtner looked like.

If you could get a third round pick in a trade for Martavis Bryant would you do it?

I saw this comment on Twitter in more than a couple of ways the last couple of days… “Ben needs a coach not a friend.” Let’s see. With his “friend” at OC he went to 2 Super Bowls and won one. With his “coach” he never made a Super Bowl. Plenty of other variables though right? Sure but let’s not pretend those were involved in the original comments.

Re-structuring Ben Roethlisberger’s contract (no new added money) makes some sense and should help the Steelers’ salary cap situation. Keep an eye out for this.

As I’ve said and will continue to say until the Steelers say otherwise, Le’Veon Bell will be hit with the ‘non-exclusive franchise tag.’ This means other teams could sign him but they’d have to give the Steelers two first round draft picks. I just don’t see the Steelers meeting Bell’s demand on a long-term deal. I’ve been wrong before.

Have a great weekend Steeler Nation!

  1. Trading Bryant for a third round pick doesn’t make sense. We should take advantage of his contact year production and go for the prize. Was Butler’s coaching as bad as haley? The answer would be worse. But he wasn’t throttling an elite unit either. In all honesty changes should have been made last off season. Something needs to improve on defense, if i were making decisions[and i’m not] i would take a long hard look at why our LB’s appear to be taking bad angles all the time. Is it the scheme or the players?? BTW our safeties flat out stink, it’s almost as if they aren’t even on the field.
