SCB Steelers Quick Hitters: The “Crossing Our Fingers” Edition

Good Friday to you Steelers fans.

Cam Sutton got up slowly yesterday from the field at St. Vincent College. When players do that, the amount of breath that is held is based strictly on who the player is. I’m sorry, but some players who look banged up will get a much different reaction than others. It is what it is… Sutton was being evaluated for a lower knee injury and it isn’t thought to be bad. The truth is that this is football. Injuries are going to occur and all you can do as a coach or fan is cross your fingers so to speak in the hopes that you get those that aren’t deemed ‘severe.’ So far the Steelers are avoiding the dreaded bug but every team knows it eventually comes for you. Hopefully Mike Tomlin has an extra large can of bug spray.

The Podcast

Episode 279 of the SCB Steelers Podcast presented by DEK Roofing Inc of South Florida is available for your listening and/or viewing pleasure. Ellie Finnerty jumped on to give us her thoughts on Diontae Johnson’s contract and the Deshaun Watson situation. She also introduced us to a new British swear word you have to hear!

Tweet of the Day… LOL

The Specifics

Diontae Johnson’s contract is an extension. It adds two years on to this existing one and will pay him over $18 million per season. We learned overnight that he will receive $27 million in guaranteed money. Johnson told reporters he thought he “could have gotten a little more” but was good with the deal. I have to believe two things happened. One (Scarps said this on the Podcast last night) is that Omar Khan likely told him he was going to be franchised for the next two years and two knowing his deal is up a year before most of the other big WR deals signed this year is a big ‘get’ for him.

Around Camp

Our eyes in the sky in Latrobe continue to be perplexed by some of the poor throws and poor decision-making of Mitchell Trubisky. He’s had some good moments but overall he has not looked good and when the team goes down to the goal line for “seven shots” he looks even worse. Not good in my book… If you had to pick a winner between the O-Line and D-Line so far in Camp you’d say there’s two ways to grade this. The starting offensive line has been better than expected and continues to have moments of success against a solid front. On the flip-side is depth. The Steelers’ defensive line is much deeper than it was last season and the depth of the O-Line is not very good… Anthony Miller is making a very strong push at wide receiver. He might convince Mike Tomlin to keep six receivers… Myles Jack has been the best and most consistent player in Camp so far… Kenny Pickett is still making mistakes BUT he has looked much better in the last few days when it comes to decision-making and that’s a good thing.
