SCB Steelers Quick Hitters: The “Colbert Strategy” Edition

by Steeldad

Good Tuesday to you Steelers’ fans.

A week or two ago Pittsburgh Steelers’ General Manager Kevin Colbert floated the idea of adding three rounds to this year’s NFL Draft. His thinking made some sense as the current national crisis has made it difficult for scouts, coaches and team executives to meet with players. His concern was that the flurry to sign undrafted free agent rookies would be even crazier than it normally is. Colbert’s idea was good but there wasn’t nearly enough time to implement it. Still, I believe Colbert and company have formed a strategy to try and combat the post draft chaos. On Monday, the Steelers signed yet another former XFL player in former Penn State wideout Saeed Blacknall. He becomes the fifth former XFL’er to come to the Steelers. While I cannot say any of these men will make the 53 man roster right now I can say they provide experienced bodies for Camp. Several of these guys have already experienced an NFL Training Camp so they’ll come with some benefits the regular rookies will not. I do not believe this is some kind of ‘new age way of thinking’ here by Colbert but I do see it as a bit of a strategy that he feels will reap benefits for 2020 at least.

So Bad it Hurts

Ask yourself, how many years now have the Steelers allegedly been “Drafting Ben’s successor?” I’ll bet the answer is probably around 7-8 years and it only gets more ramped you each year. ESPN draft guru Mel Kiper, Jr has the Steelers taking Oklahoma QB Jalen Hurts at pick 49. Kevin Colbert has told us repeatedly that he’s happy with his QBs. Would it be the first time he’s said one thing and done another? Heck no! But can anyone explain how Hurts would fit this offense? “They probably want to use him like the Saints is Taysom Hill!” Right. We know how Big Ben loves to flex out wide or come off the field period too… Did you gather the sarcasm there??? Hurts could be a really nice NFL QB given his experience at two major college powers but I don’t see the Steelers wasting a second round pick when there is so much talent on the board there at positions of need.

Tweet of the Day… Some of you will remember this guy!!

From His Basement

The NFL announced that Commissioner Roger Goodell will be announcing the draft picks from his basement. This was first reported by Peter “Patriot” King who likely lives in Goodell’s basement in an effort to be further up the Commissioner’s rear end. I guess one nice thing for Goodell is that he won’t have to hear the boos this year.

Spring Workouts

The NFL also announced today that there will be some modifications to the league’s OTA schedule due to the Covid-19 crisis. I’ll have some more of the specifics tomorrow but this isn’t surprising at all. As of this writing I still expect the NFL to start on time in some way or another.

Have a great day Steeler Nation!
