SCB Steelers Quick Hitters: The “Colbert Conundrum” Edition

Good Tuesday to You Steelers’ Fans.

The players will enjoy a day off today after four straight practice days and I’ll get to that shortly but first… What exactly is going on with Steelers’ GM Kevin Colbert? Last week it was reported that he requested not to have his contract extended opting for a year-to-year approach. The Athletic’s Ed Bouchette suggested Colbert could leave for Carolina at season’s end where he would join new owner and former Steelers’ minority owner David Tepper. At 62, Colbert has plenty of time left to continue his work as a leader for someone but what has led to this? What I can tell you is that like any long term relationship, he and Mike Tomlin haven’t always seen eye to eye on everything. To be clear, when it comes to the Draft, Colbert has the final word on selections. That doesn’t mean Tomlin doesn’t have input but ultimately the decision falls on Colbert. While that may be an issue, I’ve been told that last season was ‘trying’ for Colbert who like all of us was frustrated with the Antonio Brown and Le’Veon Bell situations. I’ll leave it at that. Like most GMs Colbert has had some good years and some bad ones. A North Catholic Alum, he’s a Pittsburgh guy to be sure but perhaps he’s ready to take his life’s work elsewhere.

Here’s an apology for you Le’Veon

Did you see yesterday where Bell issued an apology to Fantasy Football owners who drafted him last year? Hey, Lev, how about an apology to Steeler Nation? How about an apology to all those fans who bought your jerseys? What about an apology for lying to us? Something about “this will be my best season yet…” You chose the path you did and that was your prerogative as the player in Franchise Tag situation. But maybe your apology should have been directed to more than just fantasy owners.

Tweet of the Day… Just don’t bring back the bumblebee jerseys JuJu!

The SCB Steelers Podcast 142 has dropped!

We talked about all of the latest Training Camp news last night on the Steel City Blitz Steelers Podcast presented by 26shirts.com/Pittsburgh. From the injuries to the guys who are shining and the guys who aren’t we covered it all!

Ola! Ola! Ola!

Ola Adeniyi has a chance and I stress a chance, to make his mark on this team. He’s had a fantastic camp so far and has already proven he can pursue and get to the quarterback. The questions? Can he set the edge against the run and can he drop into coverage? If he can do those things consistently then he’s going to be tough to get off the field.

No More Heinz??

It was announced yesterday that Heinz will not continue with naming rights of Heinz Field after 2021 and that has of course led to speculation of who may replace them. UPMC seems the most logical choice but there are others to be sure. Frankly I hate corporate naming rights. I understand why they do it (MONEY) but I miss the days of a stadium of field being named after a famous player or coach or other important person from the area. I’d love to see the Steelers drop the naming sponsorship but that isn’t happening.

Have a great day Steeler Nation!
