SCB Steelers Quick Hitters: The “Boring Day” Edition

Good Wednesday to you Steelers’ Fans.

Today is that day of the year that as a kid I hated. Much like I do today, I loved sports back then. Probably, no not probably, more than I do today. I focus so much on the Steelers that I just don’t pay as much attention to the other sports like I used to. Anyway I’m getting off topic… This day was that one day of the year where ZERO sports existed. The day after the All-Star Game meant that there was no baseball and there were no other major sports going on either. ESPN realized this many years ago and that allowed the ESPY’s to be born. They’ll air tonight but I don’t not watch. It’s not the same as a ballgame being on but if you enjoy it then that’s fine. This little rant has been more about recalling childhood than anything else. Many of you who read this daily column may be around my age and you may recall this day. I couldn’t help but consider it when I saw the All-Star Game was last night. The good news? The Steelers will be on the fields of St. Vincent College in 16 days. That makes me feel better.

Speaking of the ESPY’s I wouldn’t be surprised to see JuJu Smith-Schuster make an appearance.

Tweet of the Day… I think this tweet captures literally thousands of us.

We fire up the SCB Steelers Podcast presented by 26shirts.com/Pittsburgh this evening. Believe it or not, it’s time to start looking at some of the major Training Camp battles that we expect to see. Tune in and don’t forget to give us a review on iTunes!

There’s been lots of talk recently about Jaylen Samuels and his potential use as a “Swiss Army Knife” by Randy Fichtner and the offense. I think there’s a lot to this discussion. When Samuels came out of NC State, there were questions about just what position he truly played. As a member of the WolfPack he played running back, tight end, H-Back and receiver. Had he been faster I think he would have likely been drafted much higher. All that said, much of use comes down to just how big of a load James Conner is going to have. Mike Tomlin typically rides with just one featured back but… That doesn’t mean Conner and Samuels can’t be used on offense at the same time. That is the challenge for Fichtner in 2019. Can he utilize both players?
