SCB Steelers Quick Hitters: The “Blame Game” Edition

Good Tuesday to you Steelers’ Fans.

The Pittsburgh Steelers could win 432 games in a row and after that one loss the fan base could literally explode in anger. I get it, I really do but constantly looking for someone to blame doesn’t take the loss away. The fact is that the Steelers outplayed the Broncos throughout the game but you can’t beat yourself. Xavier Grimble knows this. James Conner knows this. And Ben Roethlisberger knows this. Trust me, they know and understand how you feel about them turning the ball over. The Steelers lost. I don’t like it any more than you do but trying find blame to make ourselves feel better doesn’t change the outcome.

The Steelers may be catching a break with the Chargers’ Melvin Gordon suffering a sprained knee Sunday. He’s listed as week-to-week but I’m going to assume he won’t be available Sunday night. Don’t dismiss Austin Ekeler who has become a very nice compliment to Gordon.

Mike Tomlin press conference coming up today at noon eastern. I think injury news with guys like Stephon Tuitt, Marcus Gilbert and T.J. Watt will be among the most important topics.

Tweet of the Day… I think there may be some truth to this comment.

I think the shine is definitely off rookie James Washington. I’ve tried to defend him and tell people to “give it time” but my confidence in him for 2018 is waning. His diving attempt at a deep throw was strange. Had he kept running he likely would have had a touchdown.

in case you missed it, the Bengals placed quarterback Andy Dalton on Injured Reserve ending his season. After a move made on Monday Cincinnati’s two QBs are Jeff Driskel and Tom Savage. Should the week 17 game actually mean something for the Steelers I feel pretty good about it.

Lots of questions about why the Steelers continue to use the shotgun so close to the goal line. These questions are fair let’s put it that way. Randy Fichtner (and I’m in no way excusing Ben Roethlisberger’s INT) can do better than he has in recent weeks in the red zone. I know that’s being a little critical because their RZ numbers overall are much better in 2018 but the last two weeks have been ugly. Some will suggest there’s a need to go heavy others think spreading out the defense is better. The answer is yes to both. Being able to do both things makes it that much harder for opposing defenses to plan for the Steelers. Fichtner’s use of the shovel pass is an example of going to the well too often. He has to get more diverse and more creative.

SCB Steelers Podcast coming up this week! It’ll be a doozy!
