SCB Steelers Quick Hitters: The “Big Mac” Edition

Good Friday to you Steelers’ fans.

I was perusing the news on the interwebs this morning and saw a story about Joey “Jaws” Chestnut. You’ve probably heard the name before… He’s the guy who wins the Nathan’s Hot Dog eating contest every fourth of July… Well, apparently he has set a new record. In a span of 38 minutes, Chesnut consumed 32 Big Mac burgers from McDonald’s. How this man has not literally exploded I have no idea but it got me thinking about our own ‘Big Mac’ in tight end Vance McDonald. There has been some discussion that he could be cut and in many years I’d probably agree. The problem is that backup Nick Vannett isn’t under contract either and there’s no way you enter Training Camp with Zach Gentry as your top tight end. McDonald is still quite affordable and like the rest of the offense, he struggled because the quarterback play wasn’t good. Is McDonald a top-tier tight end? No, I don’t believe so but he’s a solid tight end that despite some health issues still poses a threat especially with Ben Roethlisberger at QB. All this said, I would be stunned if he were a cap casualty especially if the CBA gets approved.

The Podcast

We originally thought Ben was going to be unavailable but he jumped in at the last second and we had another great show. We explored the options with Bud Dupree, where things are with the CBA, and mixed in a little bit of Ian’s NCAA Bracketology as well. Enjoy and make sure you give us a rating on the platform you use to listen!

Game Breaker

Every year the Super Bowl teaches us something. The team that wins almost always gives other teams a blueprint to stop a certain team or to scheme certain players open on offense. It would appear to me that the Kansas City Chiefs taught us that speed kills and the more of it you have the better. The Steelers tried this with Dri Archer and Chris Rainey and both failed miserably. I do not believe they are done trying though. If the opportunity presents itself to get a guy with great speed, acceleration and quickness I believe the Steelers will jump at it. They are in desperate need of such a player whether they be a running back or wide receiver. The need to have a guy who can take it to the house on any play is big in Pittsburgh so I for one, think they’ll target someone.
