SCB Steelers Quick Hitters: The ‘Attrition Has Arrived’ Edition

Good Wednesday to you Steelers fans.

The war of attrition that shows up annually for NFL teams has arrived in Pittsburgh. For the most part, the Steelers have avoided any serious or significant injuries but it’s all kind of come to an end in recent days. Wide receiver Anthony Miller is done for the season with a shoulder injury. Karl Joseph is done with a leg injury. They are two of the more serious injuries but they certainly aren’t the only ones. Calvin Austin III has battled a foot issue while Kevin Dotson has had a bad ankle. This is the classic war of attrition. Every team is dealing with this and the teams that have the best depth are the ones that will survive the war.

Bush

I could hold my tongue, or fingers in this case, no longer. After his awkward interview and comments yesterday I felt compelled to get some thoughts out regarding Devin Bush. At this point, I cannot see how the Steelers aren’t running out of patience with him.

Tweet of the Day… Pretty clear to me.

Cut-Down Day Number One

The Steelers were required to get their roster down to 85 players yesterday and as expected no one of a surprising nature was sent packing. With the injuries noted above and the signing of guard William Dunkle, the Steelers then released the following four players. DT Doug Costin, OT Jake Dixon, P Cameron Nizialek and C Chris Owens were all sent off to do their life’s work as Chuck Noll used to say. There will be another cut-down of five coming followed by the big day in which 53-man rosters must be set.

The QB Latest

So according to Mike Tomlin, Matt Canada and QB Coach Mike Sullivan, Kenny Pickett getting second team reps this week had nothing to do with Pickett’s performance on Saturday. Rather, it is part of their “plan” to which Mason Rudolph seemed to be totally in the dark. He said “I know as much as you do,” when asked about it. The bottom line here is that the Steelers have to know what they have in Pickett. In other words, can he truly enter the season as the number two QB? If he can, then Mason Rudolph becomes expendable. If he can’t? Then the Steelers have to be more patient than they would like. If Pickett performs well this weekend, then we could see Chris Oladokun for the first time. I still believe Mitchell Trubisky will start week one. From there? It’s anyone’s guess.

Other Camp Rumblings

Larry Ogunjobi has been kicking ass and taking names. If he stays healthy his signing could end up being one of the more significant in recent years… George Pickens continues to do ‘George Pickens-type’ things in practice… The left guard spot is easily the biggest concern on offense right now and yes, I’m including the QB spot. Kendrick Green didn’t look good and Kevin Dotson just can’t stay healthy… Kenny Pickett won the annual ‘Home Run Derby’ at Training Camp… I’m told that Gunner Olszewski is not a guarantee to make the roster. I’m surprised by this but if the Steelers believe they can get more out of someone else at a cheaper price then that’s what they’ll do.
