SCB Steelers’ Quick Hitters: The “Are You Ready?” Edition

by Steeldad

Good Friday to you Steelers’ Fans!

Even at my advanced age I’m still amazed at how something in our culture can be used to further something else. More often than not, song lyrics are taken and applied and that’s the case here with the phrase “Are You Ready?” The reference came from Hank Williams, Jr’s “All My Rowdy Friends Are Coming Over Tonight” song from a 1984 album. Williams, Jr of course altered the lyrics making them applicable to football and thus “Are You Ready for Some Football?” was eventually born. The song changed over the years, so much so that Hank, Jr made lyrics specifically for the teams each Monday Night. Most of you know the history, the controversy, etc from there but the phrase “Are You Ready?” remains a spot on comment today. We asked that yesterday on Facebook and the notifications haven’t stopped! Clearly, summer is great and all but Steeler Nation is definitely ready for some football!

I think people are going way over overboard on their concern over the new helmet-to-helmet policy. Media and fans are terrified of how a runner lowering his head on a key play late in the game could result in a penalty and ultimate cost the team a chance at victory. First of all, that happens every week in the NFL. While it may not have been the helmet issue, it could have been an overturned fumble or interception… a horrible holding call… a bad pass interference call and so on. The League is certainly going to continue getting the head out of the game but I don’t think it’s going to be as prominent as some fear.

Tweet of the Day… Something new from AB.

According to numerous Hollywood outlets, Scarlett Johansson will be in a movie that uses the 1970’s Steelers as a bit of a back story. The movie focuses on her character who is involved in the sale of anabolic steroids which of course those Steelers used a lot of in their day. There were no tests for such things back then.

Any positive thoughts I had that the Steelers and Le’Veon Bell would come to a long-term deal are waning. We are now a little more than a week out from the deadline and if there’s any good news it’s that things are quiet. That can sometimes be an indication that things are going on behind the scenes. One can hope I guess.

One of my favorite questions I get from people is “why do wear Steelers’ stuff all the time?” Because I’m not usually quick enough to think of a catchy response my go-to answer is “why NOT?”

Have a great weekend Steeler Nation!
