SCB Steelers Quick Hitters: The “Apples and Oranges” Edition

by Steeldad

Good Thursday to you Steelers’ fans.

You’ve no doubt seen a lot of negative reaction from top level players about the CBA they are being asked to vote on. Richard Sherman, Maurkice Pouncey, Aaron Rodgers and Russell Wilson are notable superstars to say they are voting “no.” Former Steeler James Harrison took it a step further by tweeting some unflattering comments about DeMaurice Smith, the NFLPA President. Part of what the players will never understand is that their game is not comparable to Major League Baseball or the NBA. It’s comparing apples and oranges to be honest. Start first with the number of games, it just isn’t comparable and this was Russell Wilson’s argument. I understand the frustration because football players feel they give more of themselves physically and sometimes more emotionally as well but the owners just aren’t ever going to see it that way. Mike Golic, who was once part of a work stoppage in the 1980’s said this morning on his show that this is exactly what happens every time at this stage. “Players don’t pay any attention to the negotiations which have been ongoing for a year but then when everything is revealed they start bitching.” Furthermore, he added that “the top paid players are always the ones who are most vocal because they are comfortable and can afford a long layoff. The vast majority of players can’t afford such a thing.” He’s absolutely correct too. I think this gets passed but it will not be by a wide margin.

Tweet of the Day… I referenced Deebo’s tweet above.

Tonight at the Combine

The NFL Combine hits the primetime this evening as quarterbacks, tight ends and wide receivers are under the spotlight. There’s going to be a lot eyes on all three positions for Steelers’ fans but mostly the receivers and tight ends. It gets underway tonight at 7pm ET. Guys to keep an eye on tonight… TE Albert Okwuegbunam, WR Jalen Reagor, WR Chase Claypool among many others.

I Don’t Get the Jalen Hurts Stuff

For whatever reason there is a segment of Steeler Nation that seems to thin that Jalen Hurts would be a good selection with our second or third (comp) pick. For the life of me I do not understand this. Hurts is a terrific player but there’s nothing about his game that fits what the Steelers do. His accuracy is not ‘NFL level’ in my opinion and his overall technique and fundamentals are lacking as a thrower. When you evaluate a player you can’t fall in love with numbers. You have to see how they translate to the NFL game. Sure there are exceptions – there always are – but Hurts is much more suited to a style that incorporates more RPOs and opportunities for the quarterback to keep the ball. That isn’t it in Pittsburgh.

Have a great day Steeler Nation!
