SCB Steelers Hot Reads – This is a Very Troubling Comment

Hey Steelers Fans. Welcome to Monday (and the offseason).

The Kickoff

One of the advantages of being older is that I’ve learned how to breathe and not overreact after these playoff losses. That doesn’t mean I’m immune from them, I’m human, but overall I do a better job of keeping things in perspective than I used to. Despite my belief that a parting of ways between the Pittsburgh Steelers and Mike Tomlin is needed, it isn’t going to happen. Gerry Dulac of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette made that official about 4pmET yesterday. The fact that the team announced this less than 24 hours after another postseason disaster tells me the pressure was greater than ever and Art Rooney II wanted to get ahead of it. I’m not surprised and you shouldn’t be either that Tomlin is returning. There sure as Hell better be a lot of other changes though.

That Troubling Comment…

The notion around the National Football League is that everyone wants to play for Mike Tomlin. OK, maybe not everybody, but you get the gist. DeShon Elliott who just finished his first season with the Steelers had some interesting comments following the loss on Saturday. “Before I got here — obviously, I know football, and I know that in the past we’ve played well in the beginning of the season and [expletive] the bed at the end,” Elliott said. “The same [expletive] happened this year — close the season out on a five-game losing streak, including playoffs. We got to figure out what’s the problem.” [Quote courtesy post-gazette.com] He may have only been here a year but Elliott gets it. The question now is whether this keeps other free agents from coming to Pittsburgh.

My Five Predictions

Each year as soon as the season ends I put together five predictions that I see happening in the offseason. I typically get one or two correct and I feel pretty confident about my choices this time around.

The Lack of Effort

There was nothing more alarming to me from Saturday night than the lack of effort I saw especially on defense. Players were jogging in pursuit. Players were unwilling to come up and make tackles. Quite frankly it was embarrassing. The Steelers may lose games but they should never be out worked and out hustled. That is a massive concern heading into next year.

Random Reads

Pat Freiermuth is a great guy and a nice tight end but I’m not paying $50 million for a tight end who can’t get two yards against a DB… T.J. Watt sounded as down and disappointed as I’ve ever heard him Saturday night. Can’t say I blame him… Speaking of Watt, his contract situation will be one to monitor this off-season… George Pickens’ comment after the game summed up his entire year. I really hope they move on from him… At some point, Art Rooney II has to start investing more into this franchise. The current way of doing things is not working… Tom Brady is just awful at color analysis. His knowledge is tremendous but man, does he repeat himself a lot… We will be here throughout the off-season as always!
