SCB Steelers Hot Reads – Rule Changes Coming?

Hey Steelers fans. Welcome to Thursday.

The Kickoff

With the NFL Owners Spring Meetings coming up at the end of the month, some of the new rules proposals have been announced and a couple of them I find quite interesting. The Detroit Lions would like to see automatic first downs and defensive holding and illegal contact eliminated. I couldn’t agree more. Defenses are already at a disadvantage in this league and far too often offenses are bailed out by these calls. Give the offense the yardage and replay the down. The Lions also are proposing that Wild-card teams should host division winners when their record is better. This one I disagree with. A team may play in a brutally tough division and finish 10-7. Another team may play in a weaker division and finish 11-6 but behind a division champ. That’s the breaks. You go on the road and I don’t see owners wanting to give up postseason gate and concessions. The Packers, as we know, want the “Tush Push” banned citing player safety. I don’t like the rugby-style play either but I don’t believe there will be enough votes to ban it.

The Steelers’ Proposal

The Steelers also announced a proposal that would allow teams in the “tampering” period to hold video conferencing calls with potential free agents rather than having them come to the facility. This probably makes sense from the Steelers’ perspective as their facilities are probably not something they want free agents to see!

Podcast Night

The SCB Steelers Podcast presented by DEK Roofing Inc will air LIVE tonight at 10pmET. We’ll cover the latest free agent news, have some thoughts on the rule proposals and we will spend some time focusing specifically on Mike Tomlin. It will be informative, opinionated and fun!

Final Word on Najee

Since signing with the LA Chargers, Najee Harris has done more talking about his former team than his current one. “We just didn’t know anything on offense, really. We didn’t have any identity. We had a young guy coming in at QB. I really didn’t have nobody to almost learn from, on the offensive side.“ Harris does make some valid points and they ring synonymous of comments by others. Is the coaching up to snuff? Who were the leaders on offense? Maybe he should have taken on more of that role…

Milroe

Reports varied widely about just how fast Jalen Milroe ran the forty at his Pro Day this week. Some said he was as low as 4.37 while others were closer to 4.5. I don’t really care because either of those are ridiculously fast for a QB. That said, his accuracy is way too erratic for my tastes. Would he be willing to move to running back? His size and speed would be a great transition but if he chooses to remain a QB, I’m not thinking about him until the fourth round.

Random Reads

If you think you know who the Steelers are drafting then you’re either a medium or you’re crazy. My best guess for round one right now is defensive line… Anyone remember when the Sporting News was a respectable source of sports news? Yesterday they had three articles on the Steelers all with different draft and trade scenarios. I suppose a blind squirrel finds a nut once in a while… Sadly they’ve gone the way of many other formerly respectable news outlets. All about the clickbait now… If you aren’t paying attention to the fighting between the Cleveland Browns’ ownership and the Mayor of Cleveland, you should. The time is going to come much sooner than you think for the Steelers and it’s not going to be pretty either.
