Hey Steelers Fans. Welcome to Monday. (Legal Tampering Monday, that is)
The Kickoff
Deep down I had a feeling a big move was coming. Omar Khan had been way too quiet in recent days. Then, on a sleepy Sunday evening, he awoke from his slumber to acquire one of the best wide receivers in football. And I don’t think he’s finished. While the Steelers’ trade for D.K. Metcalf is surprising, it is also incredibly welcome. I can only wonder what a move like this would have done during the Ben Roethlisberger years.
QB Up Next?
Not surprisingly, the Steelers are literally rumored to be interested in anyone that can play quarterback right now. The two biggest names are Sam Darnold and Aaron Rodgers. I’m not crazy about either of these guys. Rodgers brings nothing but drama and an attitude where it’s everyone else’s fault. Darnold benefited heavily from the guys around him. No doubt he performed well, but when you have high-level receivers, a good running game and a good offensive line, you are clearly starting out way ahead of the game. At this point, I won’t be a bit surprised if Russell Wilson is back.
Residual Effects
I haven’t had a ton of time to think about this but my initial thought on what happens now with the trade for Metcalf is this. A Draft day deal for George Pickens becomes a real possibility, if not a trade before then. Why? Because the Steelers aren’t going to pay two wide receivers big contracts with Pickens in the final year of his deal. I also believe there’s a better chance now that the Steelers will look to trade down. With no second round pick, any chance to recoup that would have to be given serious consideration. Obviously, what else they do in free agency will matter as well. Lastly is T.J. Watt. I have a hard time believing that Metcalf will be the highest paid Steelers’ player very long. The organization is loyal and appreciates guys like Watt so get ready… A big extension is coming.

Imagine going to the extent that Myles Garrett did to get traded only to turn around and sign a massive deal to remain in Cleveland. Weird. I thought he wanted to win… Josh Allen. Six years and $330 million with $250 guaranteed. It’s good to be the quarterback… I’m extremely curious about the Steelers’ interest in Louisville QB Tyler Shough. The guy is going to be 26 years old… What am I expecting to hear today? Defensive linemen and cornerbacks. That’s who I think the Steelers will be targeting.
