Hey Steelers Fans. Welcome to Friday.

The Kickoff

You can tell a lot about a person when they are facing adversity. That’s typically when their personality shines through in its truest colors. Justin Fields demonstrated yesterday exactly how you handle adversity in front of a gaggle of reporters desperate to get his thoughts on potentially being benched. When Fields said that his play wasn’t good enough to keep hold of the job, there was an errey silence. The Steelers’ beat writers – so used to hearing anything but honesty and humility – seemed to be almost stunned and who could blame them. Fields has been far from a great quarterback in leading the Steelers to a 4-2 record and he acknowledged those shortcomings. But he could have easily wondered why he was being replaced too. Were it not for his running ability (5 TDs on the ground) who knows where this team would be right now. All I know, is that Fields handled himself like a pro and regardless of what his football career holds for him, the young man is winning in other areas of life too.

The Podcast

Episode 391 of the SCB Steelers Podcast presented by DEK Roofing Inc is available for your listening or viewing pleasure!! Lots of great Steelers talk as always and plenty of laughs!

Doing Nothing

I’m pretty well convinced that Omar Khan is not going to make a trade for a number two receiver. While Mike Williams or DeAndre Hopkins among others may be available, the Steelers have to ask themselves a very serious question. How much does the addition of another receiver really help? Khan and the Steelers do not strike me as the type to trade for a ‘rental player.’ In other words, a guy that would only be here this year and then move on. That doesn’t seem like the Steelers’ style. The only thing that could change this is Russell Wilson. What I mean is… If he plays well but it’s clear the team is lacking dynamic receiving options (something we already know) then maybe Khan looks to add someone but at this point? I don’t see it.

Latest on the Injury Front

Roman Wilson tweaked a hamstring in practice and was added to the report. Sadly for him, it’s indicative of how his rookie campaign is going.

Throwbacks

If you’ve read my content long enough then you know that I’m a big fan of this week’s uniform. In fact, I believe it should be THE uniform rather than these weird numerals the team switched to back in the 1990’s. Block numerals on Steelers’ jerseys should be passed into law in all 50 states!!!

Random Reads

We had a great conversation last night on the podcast about Mike Tomlin and his coordinators over the years. At some point, doesn’t Tomlin have to bear some blame for the ineptitude on offense and vanilla, bend-don’t-break defense?… I’m not expecting miracles from Alex Highsmith this week. If he can help set the edge against the run and maybe force the Jets to not triple-team T.J. Watt then I’m good with that… I’m very hopeful that what we saw from Patrick Queen last week means he is now settled in and will continue to play at that level… Aaron Rodgers has lost a little zip on his throws but he’s still dangerous. If we don’t do some things to force him to hang onto the ball then we’re in trouble… Jimmy Haslam, owner of the Cleveland Browns, told the city this week he plans to build a brand new domed stadium in a suburb. This would mark the first time since their inception in 1946 that the team wasn’t on the lakeshore… Don’t laugh, I think something similar is coming to the Steelers in the next ten years.
