The Kickoff
Welp. Art Rooney II, President of the Pittsburgh Steelers, finally graced us with his presence yesterday. Well, sort of. The leader of the franchise spoke to a select group of reporters Monday. He gave some general comments and then answered questions. I laid out the highlights and offered up my opinion on his well-orchestrated event. I certainly didn’t expect to hear a ton of new things but I was surprised to hear that there will be almost none. To say I was disappointed is an understatement.
Senior Bowl
Practices at the Senior Bowl down at South Alabama University are underway and there are some interesting groups and players to keep an eye on. The majority of draft people we talk to say that the running back and defensive line groups are the deepest while QBs and wide receivers lack top end talent. That’s good and bad news for the Steelers. It’s likely they’ll target both a running back and a defensive lineman in the draft but it’s no secret they need to target quarterbacks and pass catchers too. Keep an eye on everyone, obviously, but I’m curious to see if they look at Ole Miss QB Jaxson Dart. He’s got tons of physical traits to like and his competitive nature is off the charts. But he’s also a product of Lane Kiffin’s offense which means a lot of reads and throws that don’t always translate well to the NFL. Other guys I’m watching are Iowa State WR Jayden Higgins, Kentucky DL Deone Walker, Stanford WR Elic Ayomanor, Texas A&M DL Shemar Stewart and Kansas RB Trevor Neal.

It’s the Hands Again…
I don’t have to remind any of you about all of the conversation surrounding the hands of Kenny Pickett. Hand size is a big deal for quarterbacks and Pickett continues to wear gloves even in warmer temps when he plays. Alabama QB Jalen Milroe is a guy I really think – or thought – the Steelers would have some interest in. His hand size however came in very small. Measuring in at 8 3/4″, his hands are considered just a shade above the size of Pickett’s. While not always a deal breaker, it is thought that this will likely sink his draft stock a bit.
Random Reads
Mark Kaboly of the Pat McAfee Show believes the Steelers will announce some “changes” this Friday. Meaning, what coaches are not coming back due to expired contracts… Isaac Seumalo is off to the Pro Bowl for the first time in his career. I think his season was very average for him but a lot of that was due to the youth and inexperience around him… Be very careful about falling in love with players that Mike Tomlin is seen talking with at the Senior Bowl. He will talk with A LOT of players… I’ve seen a lot of people suggest that Minkah Fitzpatrick could be traded. I don’t think it will happen but I understand why it could. Let’s just say that… My very first SCB Inside Blitz will be debuting this week!
