The Next Few Days Should Help Narrow the Steelers’ Draft Focus

by Steeldad

Right now, we are in the midst of the NFL’s version of “speed dating.” This is where teams can openly court unrestricted free agents without penalty. While teams can announce they’ve reached agreements with these players, actual contracts can’t be signed until tomorrow.

You’ve already heard of guys like Ndamukong Suh and Todd Herrimans reaching agreements among several others but what you haven’t heard is anything about the Steelers.

That will likely change as we go through the day on Monday and what will also happen through the next few days is that the Steelers’ draft process should start to come into view.

Popular opinion has the Steelers looking hardest at the outside linebacker position as well as at cornerback.

With the team about $11 million under the salary cap, they could look to sign one of the top guys at either position but then they would be relatively short on money for other free agent signings.

The more likely scenario has the Steelers grabbing a couple of mid-level guys which is their usual custom and then saving a few dollars for emergencies.

Regardless of which of these scenarios happens, the team’s draft plans will start to become more obvious. The two areas already mentioned would remain top targets in the draft while I would also add the possibility of an offensive lineman as well.

There is an argument to be made that the Steelers could be forced to go with the “BPA” or Best Player Available. That could be a tight end or even strong safety if Alabama’s Landon Collins is there.

Expect some news to start coming down from on high later today.

If Ben isn’t signed by the draft, maybe we see the Steelers make trade up for Marcus Marriotta, or pick Brett Hundley, at 22. If they trade, it will probably be to Tennessee for a couple 1st round draft picks.
