Blake’s Arrest Should Be Taken With Some Perspective

by Steeldad

When you’re the fan of an NFL team, you often find yourself holding your breath during the offseason. The reason for this is that in recent years the offseason has been a breeding ground for inappropriate and senseless behavior by players.

The Steelers’ Antwon Blake became the latest professional football player to find himself in handcuffs as he was arrested this past weekend in California for public intoxication.

To be clear, there was no report that he was disobeying officers and no reports of him starting trouble with other people. Obviously, Blake was doing enough to draw attention to himself but is his offense something we should be embarrassed by or worried about?

I don’t think so and I’ll tell you why; Blake could have made far worse decisions than being intoxicated in public. He could have gotten behind the wheel of a carĀ for instance making it even worse both in the eyes of the law and the NFL and perhaps the public.

This isn’t an attempt to lessen the fact that Blake was arrested because he was; there’s no disputing that and I’m sure he’s as upset about it as anyone. The problem is that with every legal situation that arises in the NFL we tend to give them all the same treatment.

That’s where a great deal of the problems are. We see an arrest, hear what it’s for and then jump to conclusions when we don’t know nearly as much as we think we do.

I suggest we wait and hear from the organization or from Blake himself before we jump to conclusions. For now though, this could have been a lot worse so let’s just be happy it wasn’t.
