It’s been an exciting last couple of days for fans of the Pittsburgh Steelers. It’s also been frustrating, irritating and downright bizarre too. Such is the nature of the beast when free agency tampering begins.
Omar Khan and the front office set out to find a quarterback and of this writing they still have not done that. Another day of this malarkey and I may volunteer to play the position myself. Aaron Rodgers continues to be the number one name although he’s playing the Steelers against the New York Giants and possibly the Minnesota Vikings as well. Waiting patiently in the corner is Russell Wilson who, after all of the buzz about him not being the guy, may end up BEING THE GUY!
The trade for D.K. Metcalf is exciting and a player of his abilities was desperately needed. But the excitement and optimism is tempered by the fact that we don’t have a damn clue as to who will throw the ball to him yet. As exciting and hopeful as this trade was, the fact that Elandon Roberts was not brought back was troublesome to many. The team instead signed Malik Harrison who had a nice season in Baltimore but there are serious questions about his overall level of play.
The Kenneth Gainwell signing last night was a good one, but do we have an actual ‘number one running back?’ Gainwell reminds me of Mewelde Moore and Jaylen Warren we know is more than capable but do they view him as a true starting running back?
While Khan has brought in Harrison and Darius Slay, I’m still perplexed that they haven’t been able to sign any depth at defensive line yet which is leaving me extremely disappointed. I suspect we’ll see some movement on this as soon as today but definitely this week.
I enter every season with a realistic point of view and I’ll do the same thing in the fall. Right now though I find myself looking more towards 2026 which reminds me a lot of the 1980’s. And as we found, hope was not a strategy.
