Steelers, Wilson Reportedly Have Mutual Interest as Meeting Awaits

In the words of Heath Ledger’s ‘The Joker,’

“And here we go…”

According to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette’s Gerry Dulac, the Pittsburgh Steelers will reportedly meet with former Seattle and Denver quarterback Russell Wilson in the early stages of free agency next week. Dulac also reports that Wilson has interest in playing for the Steelers. Wilson was told earlier this week that he would be released by the Broncos when the new league year begins.

What I find most interesting about this development – should it happen – is what that says about Kenny Pickett.

We need to be very clear in our understanding here. If Russell Wilson agrees to come to the Steelers, he isn’t coming here to “compete.” He’s coming to be the starter. Despite Omar Khan saying he has ‘faith’ in Pickett and that the team would like to re-sign Mason Rudolph, this is a clear sign that he believes Wilson is an upgrade over both.

To put a positive spin on this, perhaps having Wilson in the quarterback room is something they think Pickett needs. Yes, Mitchell Trubisky was a solid, veteran presence to have, but Wilson is a Super Bowl Champion. No disrespect to Trubisky but that’s a lot more experience and a better resume than he’ll even have.

We will have all the latest on this tonight on the SCB Steelers Podcast presented by DEK Roofing Inc at 10pm ET.
