Steelers Should Take a Shot on Terrelle Pryor

by Steelbydesign

Back in 2011, prior to the 2011 supplemental draft, Steelers coach Mike Tomlin asked a young Terrelle Pryor a question that any football player growing up in Pennsylvania would dream to be asked.

“Do you want to play for the Pittsburgh Steelers?”

After some discussion with the Steelers coach, Pryor concluded that he may be better off not playing near his hometown, where he would have a lot of distractions.

I think that was a pretty mature decision made by the young player. With his career possibly on life support though, I’m sure Pryor would love to suit up for the black and gold now.

After being cut by the Bengals, Terelle’s agent Drew Rosenhaus is putting out the word Friday morning that his client is willing to make the transition to the wide receiver position.

I’m not sure if Pryor has the skills to be a great NFL wide receiver, but I do think that the Steelers have shown they’re interested in a “slash” type of player by bringing in Devin Gardner and Tyler Murphy this off-season.

To me, Pryor is a better athlete and a better passer than both of those guys. If you like what Gardner potentially brings to this team, then you should love the former Buckeye.

As a backup quarterback, I think that Pryor is possibly an upgrade over Bruce Gradkowski… but I KNOW he’s an upgrade over Landry Jones. I never thought that Terrelle was a great passer, but I also thought he played better in Oakland than a lot of people gave him credit for. Bruce Gradkowski (also a Pennsylvania native) would be a great mentor to Pryor.

As a wide receiver, we have no idea what he might bring to the table… but he has all the physical tools you could want at the position. Realistically, he’d see most of his snaps as a special teamer anyway, and I do think he could do well there.

One dimension that I haven’t seen discussed with Terrelle, is whether or not he could make a good return man. I would love to see what he can do, especially on kick returns.

While he is bigger than most great returners I think that Josh Cribbs did just fine despite being bigger than guys like Devin Hester or Dante Hall.

At this point, there’s really no downside to bringing in the very talented player. He’d cost practically nothing for the Steelers, and could really contribute to the team in a number of places.
