My father used to make an omelette he called a “fridge omelette.” He called it this because instead of your basic ham and cheese omelette, he threw everything in the refrigerator into the pan. Somehow, no matter how it looked, it always tasted like a masterpiece. The Pittsburgh Steelers threw in a little bit of everything in their 24-14 win over the New York Giants.
The offense, led by Ben Roethlisberger, wasn’t perfect by any stretch but they did a lot of good things. Whether it was Antonio Brown or Ladarius Green in the passing game or the offensive line and Le’Veon Bell in the running attack, there were lots of things to like.
The defense was even more consistent on this dark Sunday evening along the riverfront. Rookies Sean Davis and Artie Burns each made excellent plays while the “old men,” James Harrison and Lawrence Timmons got in on the act with a sack and a huge interception respectively.
And who could forget the contributions on Special Teams? Randy Bullock, who was signed just 24 hours ago, went three for three on his field goal attempts while Jordan Berry continued his mastery of hitting wedge shots inside the 20.
This was the type of win that Head Coach Mike Tomlin preaches about. One where all three phases come together to do their jobs in harmony. Or at least he makes it sound harmonious… This was a much-needed home win in my opinion. After two weeks on the road, the Steelers returned to their scene of the crime where they were beaten in a shootout by Dallas. It was a loss that stung but two road wins and a little extra time off was the elixir they needed.
This was far from perfection however. There were dropped passes and more stupid penalties then I care to recall and Mike Tomlin has to get those under control. But it was still a win and that’s all that matters. The Steelers now head to the road again for the final two times this year at Buffalo and at Cincinnati.
The Steelers cannot expect help down the stretch. If they’re going to win this division they need to do it themselves. If they take the recipe from today they can do it. After all, a little bit of everything can go a long way.
