Steelers Combine Updates from Wednesday

Pittsburgh Steelers General Manager Kevin Colbert was the first of any team officials or coaches to take to the podium at the combine.

As you might imagine, Colbert offered little in terms of details on the following topics.

  • Ben’s Contract: “It’s an on-going process. We hope to have something done sooner rather than later.”
  • On Jason Worilds: “Maybe he comes back. Maybe he moves on.” Colbert also mentioned the transition or franchise tags are still options. I don’t see either of those happening.
  • He was also asked about meetings held last week with veterans Ike Taylor, James Harrison, Brett Keisel and Troy Polamalu and said, “Those meetings went well.”

The Steelers also spent some time with tight ends Nick O’Leary of Florida State and Jesse James of Penn State. Both are likely mid-round picks but the decision to use some of their allotted interview time with these young men may send a signal.

With Heath Miller and practice squad member Rob Blanchflower the only tight ends on the roster, the interviews may be a sign the Steelers would like to add depth here through the draft rather than free agency.
