Steelers Combine Updates for Thursday

by Steeldad

A couple of interesting developments from today at the NFL Combine in Indianapolis for the Steelers.

First, they used one of theirĀ allotted interview slots to chat with Alabama running back T. J. Yeldon. There’s nothing earth shattering about the Steelers talking to a running back because they need depth there but I found the choice of Yeldon a bit odd.

Most draft guys have Yeldon as a mid-round selection and I’m not certain the issue is so pressing that they need to grab a back in the third, fourth or fifth round. There are more than enough free agent backs later round backs available that can spell Le’Veon Bell.

The other side of the coin in this situation is that perhaps the Steelers are thinking they need a back that’s capable of being more than just an occasional fill-in.

What I mean is, maybe they are realizing that Bell’s workload was a bit too much and they need to spell him more often. Stay tuned on this one.

Also meeting with the Steelers Thursday was Syracuse offensive tackle Sean Hickey who grew up about 20 miles from Heinz Field in Murrysville. At 6’6″ and 306 lbs, Hickey was a fifth-year senior for the Orange and is comfortable at either tackle position.

He is expected to be a mid-to late round draft pick who could develop into a solid reserve on the offensive line.
