Steelers Begin “Hold Your Breath” Season With Training Camp Weeks Away

There are numerous names that all 32 National Football League teams have for the period we are now heading into and rarely is that name anything positive. With mandatory mini-camps now over, players for the Pittsburgh Steelers and the other teams head into a period with very little structure.

The reason this stretch of time is so worrisome for the league’s teams is that it is often an expanse of time where players make poor decisions.

From the time that mini-camp ends to the day that players report to the first day of camp, the teams have very little in the way of contact with their players. For the Steelers this year, the period is a little shorter because they’ll play in the Hall of Fame Game in early August.

That means they need to report earlier than most of the teams and if you ask General Manager Kevin Colbert or Head Coach Mike Tomlin, they’ll flat out tell you they couldn’t be happier about that.

For most players, the end of mini-camp can best be equated to the feeling of getting out of school for the summer. The months previous have been filled with workouts, OTAs and a mini-camp so the freedom of being able to travel or unwind for a last few weeks is quite welcome.

With that in mind, there’s no doubt one of the last things said by Tomlin and even the veterans was probably something along the lines of “don’t do anything stupid.”

I know I speak for all of you when I say I echo that sentiment. We need the Steelers to have a drama-free summer heading into Training Camp in Latrobe.
