SCB Steelers Quick Hitters: The “WR1” Edition

Good Thursday to you Steelers fans.

It’s hard to miss a lot of the discussion both on social media and in articles such as this one about just who is the Pittsburgh Steelers’ number one wide receiver. Let’s define the term first. While we can argue endlessly about you define it I’m going to call the guy who gets the most targets. If the quarterback is looking your way more than anyone else then you’re the number one guy. Fans are rightfully excited about Diontae Johnson. The skilled route runner was electric last season leading the team in receptions and adding some burst to the punt return game as well. His 59 receptions on 90 targets led second place James Washington by 12 and 15 respectively. The team’s presumptive WR1 starting the 2019 season was JuJu Smith-Schuster who was targeted 70 times but had just 42 receptions. He was limited to 12 games due to injury and like everyone else was hampered by poor quarterback play. This is a different year however. There are new targets in Chase Claypool and Eric Ebron and oh yeah, that Roethlisberger guy is back as well. The hope or goal here would be to work Johnson and Smith-Schuster off of each other. The residual effects there could be a positive result for Washington or the aforementioned Claypool or Ebron. The old saying with two good QBs is that if you have two QBs then you actually have none. I don’t see that here in this case. Johnson is on the verge of serious stardom while JuJu is in a contract year. They will both want the ball – which WR doesn’t – but the potential for both to have big seasons is there. Who gets the most targets in 2020? I really don’t care as long as they help the Steelers win.

Tweet of the Day… Shawna throwing shade. LoL

Uncle Ed! Boom!!

Ed Bouchette had a pretty good slam in his latest mailbag. He was asked by a reader if there will be fans at Heinz Field this year. Bouchette’s reply? “I don’t see 64,000. Maybe more like 20,000 so it’ll look like a Pitt home game.” Damn!!!

Running Back Rotation

If this were a normal Training Camp and preseason I would guess that Anthony McFarland, Jr would probably be on the active roster in week one. Because there are no preseason games and a very unusual Camp is underway, the Steelers will likely start out with experienced guys. Therefore we can expect James Conner, Jaylen Samuels, Benny Snell and DB Derek Watt. If they go with the four halfbacks then Kerrith Whyte probably gets it based on his time here. With new practice squad rules where up to four players can be protected I think that helps the Steelers bring rookies like McFarland along.
