SCB Steelers Quick Hitters: The “Where Does the Time Go?” Edition

Ben Roethlisberger

Good Friday Morning to you Steelers’ Fans!

I saw a tweet yesterday that hit me hard despite the fact it was not anything I didn’t already know. It basically said “I can’t believe Ben Roethlisberger is in his 15th year. Where does the time go? I feel old.” I resemble that tweet big time and I’m sure many of you do as well. I once sat in the stands at Michigan Stadium watching the Wolverines (who actually went to Rose Bowls back then) play Miami Ohio and despite the 31-13 victory a lot of Michigan fans were taking about the kid who played quarterback for Miami. He was tall and athletic and had pretty pedestrian numbers but he impressed a lot of people that day because he took a beating and kept coming back. The kid of course was Big Ben and he threw two TD passes and three picks that day in 2001 but you could see the potential. Now, I find myself a heck of a lot older and grayer and with much less hair but there stands Roethlisberger ready to battle for another season. With all of the hype around Mason Rudolph being “the future” I hope you take time to appreciate what we’ve had in number seven.

We recorded the latest of edition of the Steel City Blitz Steelers Podcast presented by 26shirts.com/Pittsburgh last night and it’s here for your listening enjoyment. Ben, Cnic and I were joined by Matt (@thesteelcrew) and we broke down the first day of camp as well as took a look at Cnic’s 53-man roster projection.

Tweet of the Day… This is a great pic our SM guy Damien tweeted out. Might be the only time we ever saw Jack smile.

I’m really hoping the National Anthem flap goes away but it won’t. I think for the most part guys just want to play football but there will continue to by some that use the moment to draw attention to social issues they are passionate about. I believe this will carry into 2021 when the collective bargaining agreement ends and don’t be surprised if we have another work stoppage in the NFL.

Something to keep an on eye for the upcoming season is the number of “illegal man downfield” penalties that are called. As more and more offenses use RPO’s or “run-pass option’ plays, defensive coordinators have been going out of their minds. They believe offenses are getting away with offensive linemen getting too far downfield. I don’t know that you’ll see a glaring difference but it will no doubt be addressed in all 32 Training Camps.

Have a great weekend Steeler Nation!
