SCB Steelers Quick Hitters: The ‘Time to Get Serious’ Edition

Good Wednesday to you Steelers fans.

It’s always good to see the Mike Tomlin Presser each and every Tuesday throughout the season but when he speaks for the first time it hits a little harder. It tells me that week one is here. It tells me that we have made it through Training Camp and the preseason. And it tells me things are about to get real. It’s what we all live for isn’t it? Don’t we wait through the entire off-season, summer, Camp and preseason just to get here? I know I do and seeing him stride to the podium yesterday reminded me once again that week one is here and it’s time to get serious.

Gentry Stays in the North

We all know the National Football League is a business and like any business, the job is to be successful both as a team and for players. While I was hopeful that Zach Gentry would be brought back, it wasn’t to be. The 6’8” tight end has joined the Practice Squad of the rival Cincinnati Bengals. Gentry has to do what’s best for him and if that’s the quickest way for him to get back on the field then so be it. I just find it unfortunate it has to be within the division.

Tweet of the Day… This was sad to see. Mort has been a class act for a long time and I wish him well.

It’s Not a Bad Thing

Some fans seem to be upset that Dan Moore will get the start at left tackle over rookie first round pick Broderick Jones. Personally, I see no reason to be bothered by it. Moore did exactly what you want your incumbent player to do; he busted his ass to get better. What Moore has done is actually put pressure on right tackle Chuks Okorafor. Moore can play there too and if Jones starts to push for the job at LT then I’ll take Moore over Okorafor on the other side. Competition creates better players and in turn makes the team better too. Give Jones some time. He should be just fine.

The Captains

In case you missed it, Cam Heyward, T.J. Watt, Kenny Pickett and Miles Killabrew were named captains for the 2023 Pittsburgh Steelers. There are some who are questioning the decision that leaves Najee Harris off this list as he was a captain last year. I really don’t think we need to dive too deep here. This offense, if you listen to the numerous comments from players all summer long, is clearly Kenny Pickett’s. Thus it makes sense to have your QB as a captain. I’m not going to go any further than and neither should you.

On a Personal Note…

Very excited for my son as he started the first two games of his college soccer career in goal.  He played well going 1-1 on the weekend. Proud dad for sure!
