SCB Steelers Quick Hitters: The “Tight End Issue” Edition

by Steeldad

Good Monday to you Steelers fans.

Just throwing this out there, but did you know the Pittsburgh Steelers need some serious help at the tight end position? No duh right? Currently the Steelers’ tight end depth chart looks like this; Eric Ebron, Zach Gentry and Kevin Rader. So in other words, this is essentially a wide receiver, a former college quarterback and a really big body. None of these three men are what I call “a true tight end.” Ebron is a pass catcher and is limited in his blocking while Gentry and Rader are number three tight ends on any other roster at best. I’m not being mean, I’m being honest in that assessment. As the NFL Draft nears, we at SCB are starting to wonder if the Steelers aren’t looking at a tight end early on. We can point to many issues as to why the running game has struggled in recent years but the lack of a guy being able to set the edge is one of those issues. The only first round tight end we see is Kyle Pitts who will have been drafted two hours before the Steelers even go on the clock. That leaves the only other option as Penn State’s Pat Freiermuth. Is he a first round tight end? No, he isn’t. He does a lot of things well but he is a solid second round pick in out opinion. If he is in the Steelers’ line of sight then trading down would be an ideal situation. This is not as easy as Thanos snapping his fingers either. You need a trade partner and you need to find a deal that works and you have a limited amount of time to do it in if it happens on Draft day. The problem the Steelers face here is that if they choose to go in a different direction then the quality of tight ends drops off significantly. The other option to this problem is to see if a tight end comes free during the summer. That’s putting a lot of your needs on “hope” right there. Whatever happens I can tell you they have to address this and they longer they wait the harder it will be.

Tweet of the Day… Ah the good old days….

Pro Days

There are just two dates left on the Pro Days calendar and those are Wednesday and Friday. There are five total teams left and only one (Texas Tech) is from a Power 5 Conference so I’m guessing Kevin Colbert and Mike Tomlin have logged all of the frequent flyer miles they will for this year. My Mock Draft 3.0 will be coming up this week.

Not Sure About This…

I saw a story this weekend that suggested Steven Nelson was told by the Steelers that he would have to compete for his job with Cam Sutton. First of all, Nelson did have a “down” year compared to his 2019 campaign but come on. I don’t see any situation where Cam Sutton is better than he is right now. Was this a push to get Nelson into the nickel spot? Maybe, but I just don’t see this as accurate.
