SCB Steelers’ Quick Hitters: The “The Doing Right by Shazier” Edition

Good Friday to you Steelers’ Fans!

The Pittsburgh Steelers have often been known as one of the more classy organizations in pro sports and they demonstrated that again yesterday morning. They converted Ryan Shazier’s salary into almost all of a signing bonus which means he will get more than the $8 million he’s owed in 2018 up front. The Steelers did not have to do this but when Shazier and his agent approached them about it they chose to do so. It’s a good faith sign and why shouldn’t it be? Since Shazier went down with his horrible injury in early December, both he and the Steelers have handled the sensitive situation about as well as could be. Shazier has become an inspiration for the city and for many around the world who have dealt with spinal cord injuries. For those suggesting they “should have cut him and saved the money….” It doesn’t work like that. His money was guaranteed. Regardless, this was a classy move and the right move.

For those keeping score at home…. The Steelers are now into Phase Two of their offseason program. This will include on-field work and instruction as well as the rookie mini-camp.

Tweet of the Day… This is another reason players like playing in Pittsburgh.

According to Pro Football Talk, President Trump has selected Hershel Walker and Bill Belichick to his Presidential Fitness Panel. I get the Walker selection. The man could still play pro football… But Belichick? He’s not exactly what I think of when I think of “NFL coaches who are fit.”

Peter King of Sports Illustrated announced he was leaving after 29 years at the magazine covering the NFL. Besides the great Paul Zimmerman, King was must-read stuff every Monday during football season. Sadly, over the last several years, King has become nothing more than a cheerleader for the Patriots and has often gotten too political. It’s his right as a journalist to do so but it wore on me. Whatever it is he is off to do I wish him good luck.

I must say that this weekend is a real let down compared to last. We go from all of the excitement and drama of the NFL Draft to a whole lot of nothing. I guess we have the Kentucky Derby. It’s interesting to see people in over-sized hats at an event where most people don’t even know the names of the horses.

Have a great Weekend Steeler Nation!!
