SCB Steelers Quick Hitters: The ‘Tamper With Caution’ Edition

Good Monday to you Steelers fans.

The official start of the 2023 NFL season begins on Wednesday but today…. Today begins the notorious “Legal Tampering” period. This was established several years ago after it became blatantly obvious that teams, agents and players were communicating long before the start of the actual new league year and free agency period. Therefore, it is most likely that you will hear of deals as early as this morning. Already, Steelers’ fans are clutching their Terrible Towels because there’s a lot of speculation out there that Cam Sutton is being ‘wooed’ by several different teams. I wish I could tell you to just “relax” but I can’t. I don’t know what Cam Sutton is thinking anymore than you do. I’d like to believe he is very happy playing in Pittsburgh and wants to stay, but I can also tell you that I’ve thought that before about players only to see them leave. The old saying goes, “when money talks, people listen.” The honest truth is that there is likely to be a handful of teams that can and will offer Sutton more money. That puts the ball back in the court of the Steelers, Omar Khan and Mike Tomlin. They have to decide just how much they want to pay Sutton and for how long. As far as other activity, I don’t see the Steelers being overly active in the primary free agent period. Look for them to be start making moves once the first run of free agents has passed.

Tweet of the Day… Case in point.

Mock Draft 2.0

I posted my latest Mock Draft yesterday in the waning hours before the free agent period begins. This one features a trade that might surprise you and a lineman that may not be at the position you’re thinking either.

Re-Structures

I would not be a bit surprised to hear that the Steelers have re-structured contracts for Cam Heyward, Minkah Fitzpatrick and T.J. Watt at some point today. By doing this, the team could create significant cap room. Keep in mind too that Mitchell Trubisky would not be part of this “re-structuring.” His contract would need to be extended in order to lower his cap hit as he has just one year left on his deal. Regardless of how much money the Steelers open up I still don’t expect them to sign more than one (if that) top of the line free agent.

Prospect Profiles

We’ve started our NFL Draft Coverage here at SCB and the first of our Position Profiles is out. We’ve made the decision that rather than make extensive profiles of each player, we are doing smaller ones and grouping them by position. This allows us to easier update information as Pro Days and the Combine provide more info.
