SCB Steelers Quick Hitters: The “Stress Meter” Edition

Good Victory Monday to you Steelers fans.

Why do we do this to ourselves? Watching the Steelers has become a form of medieval punishment. The ups, the downs, the highs, the lows and all literally occurring in a matter of seconds from each other. I think it’s time for me to invent a “Steelers Stress Meter.” I’m not quite sure how I can go about this or what it will look like but I feel you need it as much as I do.

Low Wattage

I’m not going to lie… As happy as I was winning there was definitely a whole inside of me knowing that T.J. Watt is likely done for the season. I’m hopeful that he can perhaps return late in the year but I just feel awful. We all know the type of person he is. This must be heartbreaking for him and for us, it takes away a year for us to enjoy watching him play.

Tweet of the Day… This is terrific.

A Constant Theme

Like it has been the previous couple of seasons, the struggles of the offensive line will be a constant theme this season. 76 yards rushing on 22 carries is just not going to get it done especially with your leading rusher being wide receiver Chase Claypool with 33 yards. The pass protection was ‘adequate’ and I think that’s being nice because Matt Canada rolled the pocket quite a bit with Mitchell Trubisky and Trubisky did his share of Houdini acts to get out of sacks. The Bengals are a solid defensive unit but the Steelers will face much tougher tests which scares the hell out of me.

Where’s Pickens?

Now maybe you see why coaches don’t take the preseason successes of certain players to heart as much as we do.  He was targeted three times, had one reception and picked up three yards. There’s a lot more that goes on for a receiver than just making athletic catches. Do you know the plays? Do you know the proper reads at the line of scrimmage? Do you know the checks and audibles? I’m not suggesting Pickens didn’t know any of these things but there’s a reason he didn’t get more looks. Give him some time.

Next Man Up

In theory, this is a great way to mentally prepare your team for when a star goes down. Let us be 100% real however. There is no ‘next man up’ who is even close to what T.J. Watt does. His presence alone forces the offense to things differently than they would normally do. There just isn’t a guy capable of replicating this. As for Najee Harris possibly being out awhile, I think Jaylen Warren will be a capable replacement. His low-to-the-ground style could make him difficult for tacklers to find. We shall see.
