SCB Steelers Quick Hitters: The ‘Start the Clock’ Edition

Good Thursday to you Steelers fans.

The phrase “start the clock” applies to many things this week. Some may think the clock has started on the tenure of Matt Canada as the Offensive Coordinator. Despite the fact I don’t see him being fired mid-season I’d say the clock has already started for sure. We can ‘stop the clock’ on seeing Calvin Austin III in 2022. The rookie started the season on Injured Reserve and needed to come off of it this week in order to play. His foot now requires surgery so he’s done and a small, fast guy needing foot surgery is not a good thing. There is good news however… The Steelers officially started the 21-day clock on the return of T.J. Watt. That means he has to be activated to the active roster in 21 days or else he sits for the season too. Personally, I think the Steelers face a very difficult decision here. If they’re 2-6 heading into the BYE, do they really want to bring him back and risk further injury? On the other hand, you are paying the guy (who desperately wants to play) a massive amount of money so you need to get every penny’s worth. I’m not going to make any predictions on this but my gut says he returns because Mike Tomlin and the Steelers just don’t wave the white flag until they are officially eliminated.

Episode 291 of the SCB Steelers Podcast presented by DEK Roofing Inc airs tonight live on YouTube and will of course provide you with the audio and video versions tomorrow. Lots of great Steelers’ talk as always.

Tweet of the Day… It’s been awhile since I posted one of Dave’s shots. Absolutely beautiful.

Canada

Look, I know there are many of you who want to see Matt Canada sent packing. I’m with you! He’s been that bad and it’s real easy to blame things on the O-Line, a rookie QB etc but Canada continues to do the same thing week in and week out and that my friends is insanity. As most of you know, the Steelers aren’t ones to part ways with coaches during the season and I think that will remain the case here. The only outlier is Omar Khan. If he truly feels a move needs to be made would he be given the green light by Art Rooney II? Mike Tomlin has a lot of pride and firing Canada would be admitting a huge failure. In other words, get used to Canada for the rest of the season.

Trade Deadline

Tuesday is the deadline for NFL teams to make trades and while there is much speculation about Chase Claypool, Mason Rudolph and Mitchell Trubisky. I don’t see any of them going anywhere right now. Rudolph is a free agent at season’s end and he’ll move on. I can see a team offering a seventh, maybe a sixth but that’s it.
