SCB Steelers Quick Hitters: The ‘Scary Season’ Edition

There’s nothing good about this Monday Steelers fans but welcome.

It seems most fitting that today is Halloween. Right now there is nothing scarier in Pittsburgh than the Steelers and not in a good way. I’m a firm believer that when the team isn’t doing well, it has more to do with than just the players. What is happening is part of a full, organizational failure. Kevin Colbert’s departure after the draft did not help. Omar Khan and his assistant Andy Weidl should have been involved way earlier in the team’s process. Mike Tomlin should not be wielding as much power as he apparently has when it comes to personnel and the hiring of his coaches. And at the end of the day, the players bear a large part of this 2-6 record. Kenny Pickett called out teammates after the game suggesting they need to study more and put in more time. I think he’s right but he should not be absolved of any wrong-doing either. He has to play better and he knows it. I realize he has no running game, young, volatile receivers and an offensive line that gets moved backwards far more than it moves forward, but Pickett still has to make better throws and better decisions. In all honesty, many of us saw 2-6 right now back when the schedule was released. The problem is that we saw much different ways of getting here. Suddenly the second half of the season doesn’t look as promising as it did in the summer and that my friends is scary.

Tweet of the Day… This is spot on. Think back to when Ben was forced to start as a rookie. Much better defense and a good running game.

Turning on Each Other

Many younger Steelers’ fans are entering uncharted waters. They have seldom had to experience their team being this bad. Social media doesn’t make it any easier. The last thing you should be doing is getting into arguments and fights with other Steelers’ fans. The majority of us have opinions on what is going on – some are right and some aren’t – just don’t make it personal as I’ve seen so many times already.

The BYE Week

The Steelers will meet a few times this week before having their mandatory four days away from the team. When they return, it will pick up like any other week heading into the New Orleans game. Keep in mind that the players can go wherever they want so if you see social media posts of them on a nice beach it’s their right to be there whether we like it or not.

Two Major Offensive Failures

Believe me, there are more but the two things I look at where this team has really screwed up are these. First, if Mike Tomlin’s plan was to truly sit Pickett for his rookie year than he should have. Easy to say in hindsight right? The guy coordinating this offense is doing him no favors either. The other one is that they failed to bring in a veteran receiver. This group desperately needed a Darrius Heyward-Bey type and they didn’t get it. There’s no leadership in terms of example or through spoken word.

Tomlin

If you weren’t sure what his biggest challenge as a head coach has been then look no further. It’s now. There are problems with his staff and there are issues in his locker room. I honestly believe the way they are playing they’ll be lucky to pick up 2-3 more wins. Tomlin deserves the benefit of the doubt but his ship is in disorder right now.
