SCB Steelers Quick Hitters: The “Repeating Myself” Edition

by Steeldad

Good Wednesday to you Steelers fans.

With the Senior Bowl now underway in Mobile, Alabama I find it a good time to repeat myself. Despite the fact that this event has only just started for this year I feel must say what I say every year during the pre-draft process. It goes something like this… The Steelers will visit with many, many players but this doesn’t mean they are going to draft them. I know that can ruin the narrative for many Steelers’ fans but it’s truth. Go back to 2019 for example. Kevin Colbert and Mike Tomlin had dinner with Michigan’s Chase Winovich. This created an absolute frenzy centering on the idea that the UM pass rusher would be the team’s first round selection. While it’s fair to say he could have been, what we also learned was that this was a fact-finding mission. They were meeting with Winovich to gather information about his teammate Devin Bush who would eventually become a Steeler. Yesterday, several people associated with the Steelers were seen talking with Alabama running back Najee Harris. Within seconds there was no shortage of tweets from people convinced that Harris would be the guy for Pittsburgh in the first round. OK, maybe he will be, but talking to any player right now, three months from the draft, is simply called “due diligence.” Tomlin, Colbert and others will talk with dozens and dozens of players but those conversations don’t always mean those guys are draft targets. Sometimes we have to just take these things with a grain of salt and move on.

Tweet of the Day… Clarification. And more on this… (see below)

“Exit” Gate

Thank goodness there are people who actually take the time to do the research. A day after a local sports radio personality said that T.J. Watt was disgruntled and skipped his exit interview, Mark Kaboly of The Athletic set the whole thing straight (see above). This whole thing is another example how desperate fans are for juicy news even when it isn’t accurate.

Senior Bowl Thoughts

One name that has been on the radar of many Steelers’ fans is Alex Leatherwood. He is the very talented offensive tackle from Alabama. His skill set appears to transfer differently to the NFL. Most experts have him slotted as a guard or even center. This makes it less likely he’d be a target unless the Steelers do in fact like him and need him at center… Najee Harris looks very much “pro ready” but there are concerns about his pass blocking… Keep an eye on Western Michigan wide receiver D’Wayne Eskridge. He had a very good day yesterday and is an absolute burner.
