SCB Steelers Quick Hitters: The “Realist’s Take” Edition

by Steeldad

Good Monday to you Steelers’ fans.

Like most of you, the video of Ben Roethlisberger throwing a football brought all kinds of good feelings. Those of us who have followed his career since college know what a special moment it was and we all hope this is merely the beginning of him returning to form. I however, am that guy. I’m the guy who has to be realistic when no one else will be. The truth right now is this; Ben threw the football with the same velocity that I throw it to my dog in the backyard. Again, I recognize this was a great sign but a realistic take is needed here. He had not thrown a ball since September. Probably one of the longest spans of ‘not throwing’ in his career. The good news is that he will have two more throwing sessions this week before leaving California and the better news is that he was allowed to skip the whole “tennis ball” thing altogether. The fact remains that this is going to be a lengthy process. You don’t have a surgery like this and start throwing with the same velocity overnight. It’s going to take time and we as fans need some patience. But, yes… It was great to see!

Combine Time

The NFL Combine begins this week and runs through next weekend. For the first time ever, there will be elements of it featured during the Prime Time viewing hours. If you would have told me a decade ago that the Combine would televised, let alone in prime time I would have said you need your head checked. But this has come full circle. It’s what we football junkies starve for and the XFL isn’t even as interesting as this will be. We should here from both General Manager Kevin Colbert and Head Coach Mike Tomlin this week as well.

Tweet of the Day… Speaking to the Combine, good stuff from Bob Labriola here.

Trade JuJu?

One Pittsburgh Radio personality has suggested more than once that the Steelers should trade JuJu Smith-Schuster. His reasoning is that he isn’t as good as thought and that right now he can still fetch a potential first round pick from a team needing a good, but not great, wide receiver. He has also cited that JuJu will be looking for a big payday as well so why not turn him into a first round receiver or some other need? The fact is this; JuJu played hurt, was without his starting QB and was definitely impacted by not having a better wide receiver across the formation from him. But to suggest he be traded is ridiculous. If it happens then clearly there is more than any of us will have ever known. But it won’t…
