SCB Steelers Quick Hitters: The “Pre-Draft Swing” Edition

Good Monday to you Steelers fans.

The pre-draft process is now in full swing and we haven’t even played the Super Bowl yet. Both the Shrine Game and the Senior Bowl were played this past week and for 30 of the NFL’s 32 teams it’s 100% ”go time” for the draft and free agency. For the Steelers, the focus is getting better. That means both free agency and the draft have to produce more successes than failures. Anyone that tells you they know what the Steelers are doing is lying. No one, not even the Steelers themselves yet know what they are doing as it applies to the off-season. Yes, there is a plan and there are players targeted but there are so many things that will change over the next two months that the plan they have will change as well. The bottom line is that we all “hear things” but Kevin Colbert and Mike Tomlin aren’t exactly spreading the word every time they leave the facility.

Odds Ball

With Super Bowl 56 now less than a week away the latest odds on the game continue to give you plenty of opportunities to wager. Whether or not you are successful remains another question entirely.

Tweet of the Day… A lot of fans see the promotion of Teryl Austin as just status quo but other see something different.

Speaking of Austin

The question everyone will want to know is just what input will he have in the defense? It has become more and more public that Mike Tomlin has been calling the defense for quite some time now. Will that continue? Will Austin be given the opportunity to do this? If Tomlin was willing to take this from Dick LeBeau and Keith Butler I see no reason to think he won’t keep calling the D even with Austin as the “defensive coordinator.”

Key Dates

For those not sure, here are some of the key dates coming for the Steelers and the NFL.

NFL Combine Indianapolis March 1-7

Deadline for Franchise or Transition Tags March 8

New League Year/Free Agency Begin March 16

NFL Draft April 28-30

Pro Bowlin’

All four of our Steelers made positive impacts on the Pro Bowl yesterday and more importantly than that is that Najee Harris, T.J. Watt, Cam Heyward and Diontae Johnson all came through the game unscathed. As for the game itself, it really is time to just stop doing it. It was two-hand touch yesterday. Why not bring the guys out to Hawaii or Miami or Vegas, have them sign some autographs and that’s it?
