SCB Steelers Quick Hitters: The ‘Podcast Change-Up’ Edition

Good Monday to you Steelers fans.

After a few days away from the keyboard I’m back and better than ever. We took a much deserved break from the Podcast last week too while I visiting my daughter in Nashville. While there, I learned that our podcast partners The Pigskin Podcast Network and Draft Kings Sportsbook were pulling the plug immediately on their entire operation. I’m not going to get into the finer details here, but there’s a lot that goes into doing a podcast well. With this announcement, that left us without a distributor and no venue with which to host the show. However… Later that day I received a message from Variety Sports Network and boom! We are right back up and rolling. I felt like ‘Seinfeld’ in that episode where every time something bad happens to him, something good follows making him “even Steven.” So for those of you that watch or listen to the show, you’ll only see a few minor things change. I’m very grateful to Brandon at VSN for reaching out to us and bringing us in with open arms. We are looking forward to the partnership!

The Recent Additions

During my break, the Steelers added safety Keanu Neal and nose tackle Breiden Fehoko. Neal was a 2017 first round draft pick who was liked a lot by Mike Tomlin and the Steelers coming out of Florida. He’s dealt with injuries and hasn’t really settled in anywhere but he should fit as a decent replacement for Terrell Edmunds. He doesn’t cover as well as Edmunds, but he should fit as that ‘in-the-box’ safety or dime LB quite well. As for Fehoko, he spent time at both Texas Tech and LSU before going undrafted. He eventually signed with the Chargers and played three seasons there. He looks very much like a classic nose tackle in terms of size. If he can two-gap and take up space on run downs then his presence should be worth it.

Tweet of the Day…  Couldn’t agree more.

Draft Options

Despite the signing of Keanu Neal, I think the Steelers drafting one relatively early in this Draft remains a strong possibility. As I said above, Neal gives them some options but it’s only in the short term. They still desperately need a guy who can cover in the slot and play the run and intermediate pass as well… Florida DL Gervon Dexter seems destined to be a Steeler. There’s a lot to like with him but there’s also a lot he has to work on… I do no think the Steelers will draft a QB. I tend to believe they learned a valuable lesson with Chris Oladokun last year. There’s no need to take a QB when you can just as easily sign one as an undrafted free agent.

Trading D.J.

I do not understand where some people come up with their ideas. I recently saw a suggestion that the Steelers could trade Diontae Johnson for a first round pick. I never say “never” but who is going to trade a first round pick for a guy who had ZERO touchdowns last year, is known to drop balls and is making $18 million per season when they can find similar production in the Draft at a more reasonable price? If it happens, then I’ll be the first to admit I was wrong but I just can’t see it for a first rounder.

Prospect Profiles

We’ve started our NFL Draft Coverage here at SCB and the first of our Position Profiles is out. We’ve made the decision that rather than make extensive profiles of each player, we are doing smaller ones and grouping them by position. This allows us to easier update information as Pro Days and the Combine provide more info.
