SCB Steelers Quick Hitters: The ‘Picked Apart’ Edition

Good Thursday to you Steelers fans.

The behavior of George Pickens on Sunday is newsworthy. In this day and age you cannot behave like that and not expect someone catch it. The CBS cameras caught it which meant everyone caught it and now here we are. Mike Tomlin has already addressed it and it should have died there. Pickens however didn’t do himself any favors by stepping in front of cameras and doing very little to quell the situation. Let’s be very clear on this point; the Steelers knew exactly who George Pickens was when they drafted him. He had a history of doing things that got him into trouble so none of this should be a surprise. I do not think however, that it should be getting the front page treatment that the locals fish wraps are giving it. The only reason it’s still news at all is because certain sports personalities need a trouble-maker. They need someone to feed their narratives which the ultimate goal of course is to get more listens and more clicks. Pickens didn’t exactly throw furniture from a balcony or strip of his pads and quit mid-game but some would have you believe that’s what he did. Would I prefer to not see this behavior? Yes. Do I understand he is a young man still maturing in many ways? Yes. Do I like his competitive fire? Yes. At the end of the day he’s been picked apart and now it’s up to him to take the story in a new direction.

Injury Thoughts: Too early in the week to make any major declarations… Clearly Jackson is out and Tyler Huntley will start at QB… My guess in the case of most of these players, rest is the major thing here. This late in the season it is to be expected.

For Your Consideration

Let’s say Kenny Pickett plays really well over these final five games. If he does, it means Matt Canada is back as the offensive coordinator. If he plays really poorly, it means that Canada is gone. If you choose the latter then also remember that Pickett not playing well would only increase those saying Pickett wasn’t the right pick. I honestly think this is where we are headed. Art Rooney II does not like to pay people who don’t work for him. If they move on from Canada, he would still be owed around $700,000. It’s fair to consider that Pickett could play well and Canada is still let go, but right now? My money is on Canada coming back.
