SCB Steelers Quick Hitters: The “One Has to Go” Edition

by Steeldad

Good Tuesday to you Steelers’ fans.

So as you know by now the Pittsburgh Steelers drafted a running back in the NFL Draft a few weeks back. I’m terrible at math but I think I can handle this one so follow along with me. Currently in the Steelers’ offensive backfield we have James Conner, Benny Snell, Jr, Jaylen Samuels and rookie Anthony McFarland. There are also guys like Kerrith Whyte, Trey Edmunds and Ralph Webb who aren’t going to just let guys win jobs without a fight. My overall point however is this; someone isn’t getting a helmet on Sunday’s that may come as a surprise. For sake of argument let’s say everyone is healthy. James Conner is your number one back. Is Snell, Jr or Samuels the number two? Could it possibly be McFarland? I have a hard time not seeing him on the roster. They drafted him for his speed and that’s a quality they have to have. So whether he’s RB2 or RB3 he’s likely making the roster. Edmunds offers very little in my opinion and Webb is likely a Camp body as well. Whyte is a bit of a wild card because he does possess some ‘home run threat’ and really didn’t get much of a chance last season. That said, I think the Steelers are in a “good” spot. I’m not saying “great” because we don’t know what they have in McFarland yet and a full offseason may do Snell quite well. The big question however is Conner. If he struggles with injuries then this becomes a no-brainer. Snell, Samuels and McFarland are your guys. But as we all hope, if Conner can play then one of those guys doesn’t. That’s the situation we have as of right now.

The Podcast (I Promise)

I really did think we were going to do a show last week but one thing led to another and we didn’t. But… I promise we are returning as we record this evening. We’ll discuss the Steelers’ schedule in depth and talk some personnel too. Look for the Steel City Blitz Steelers Podcast presented by DEK Roofing later tonight!

Tweet of the day… How could this not be my tweet of the day?

QBs and Cap Numbers

There’s been some interesting conversations recently on ESPN’s “Get Up” about quarterbacks and their percentage of their team’s salary cap vs getting to the Super Bowl. Matt Ryan is the only QB in recent history whose contract was more than 15% of his team’s cap to get to the Super Bowl. Since 2000, no QB in the top five of salaries has won the Super Bowl. I assume you’re curious…. Ben Roethlisberger’s contract makes up 11.8% of the Steelers’ salary cap. Did you think it would be higher? I have to admit that I did.
