SCB Steelers Quick Hitters: The “Number 3 QB” Edition

by Steeldad

Good Thursday to you Steelers fans.

I want to clear something up right away in regards to Dwayne Haskins. He is not in Pittsburgh to be the starter. He’s not even in Pittsburgh to be the backup. Right now, he’s competing to be the number three quarterback. That’s the truth. In time, if everything goes right in his world, then maybe he competes for the one or two spot but that’s getting way ahead of ourselves. The man Haskins is competing with is Josh Dobbs. Entering his fifth season, Dobbs’ importance is probably centered around the fact that Ben Roethlisberger goes to him before anyone else when he comes to the sidelines. Typically it’s the coordinator or the backup, not the number three. Is that enough to keep Dobbs around? That’s largely going to depend on Haskins. In terms of potential, he has more of it than Dobbs. He’s actually got more starting experience and a much bigger arm than Dobbs but will he do enough in Camp to make coaches comfortable with him while releasing Dobbs? You may be thinking “Why is he talking about a third string QB?” Well, have you forgotten Duck Hodges already? That’s why.

The Podcast

We return to the Podcast airwaves this evening… The SCB Steelers Podcast presented by DEK Roofing Inc offers up the following topics tonight… We share our thoughts on what is going on with Kevin Dotson… More on David DeCastro… Some key points as we approach Training Camp and much more on the Steelers.

Tweet of the Day… Have always liked John Clayton, but in recent months he’s been way off on a lot of things. Remember Bud Dupree signing for one for $8 million?? This comment however has some teeth. Both sides need to put their differences away and talk.

Vince Williams

Very few among us really know what role Vince Williams will have on this team in 2021. As of right now he could be slotted in next to Devin Bush or he’ll be backing up Robert Spillane. Perhaps the most important thing Williams will offer is leadership. With Maurkice Pouncey, David DeCastro and Bud Dupree gone, there is definitely a leadership void. Williams is well-respected and why shouldn’t he be? He was a late round selection who worked his way into a starting linebacker position in Pittsburgh and that in and of itself demands respect. Whatever is in the cards for Williams moving forward he is a guy that has gotten every ounce out of himself.

Another Kicker?

The Steelers have reportedly signed kicker Sam Sloman. He was drafted by the LA Rams in 2020 out of Miami. He spent time there and with Tennessee. I would view this as nothing more than bringing in a guy to take a look at and to give Chris Boswell someone to talk to during Camp. Because Boswell has had some injury issues, I would say this is due diligence by the Steelers and a smart move. You don’t want to be playing musical chairs with kickers if you don’t have to.
